March 30th, 1943 â Breaks leg and ankle landing wrong on a jump, spends at least one month in the hospital during training
June 5th, 1944 â Problems with his tooth, sent to the dentist with a guard just before the D-Day jump
June 6th, 1944 â Complications with his gear on the jump, wrapped his rope around his hand and ended up shearing the skin off of his hand and wrist
BrĂŠcourt Manor assault â A grenade gets thrown between his legs, he flips over and the butt and stock of his rifle take most of the blast. A second grenade blows up beside him but doesnât injure him. Days after this, his earlier hand injury swells so much he is unable to throw his grenade which he disposes safely of instead. He was sent back to England instead of an aid station
October 8th, 1944 â James Campbell and him have an 88 gun explode on top of them, a building crashing down and burying them. James is dead, Joe has shrapnel in his back, legs, and his neck is shredded up âlike rats got to it.â Joe is evacuated from Holland through British medical corps and ends up in England again, rejoining Easy two weeks before Bastogne, at Mourmelon
January 2nd, 1945 â After developing trenchfoot, Joe is struck in the wrist by a piece of tail-fin from a bomb. When he removed his overcoat for the medic, the sleeve caught on the shrapnel and pulled it out. He spends the night in the aid station
January 3rd, 1945 â He returns to Easy Company after escaping the aid station. When artillery started, Joe was making sure his men were in foxholes, and he was caught in the open and hit. He did not hear the shell
Back in the states â His leg develops gangrene and they cut it again. They cut it four times. If it hadnât worked the last time, he was told heâd die. He dropped weight from 185lbs to 110lbs
Joe continues to have complications of course with the loss of his leg, but also with nerve damage in his right hand. He never got rid of all the shrapnel in his body and scars litter his back, arms, and right side
October 5th 1992 â The stress his good knee is taking deteriorates it over time, and he receives a knee replacement
September 3rd, 1995 â Joe passes after a long suffering battle with pancreatic cancer, reaching only 90lbs in his illness
