This isn’t a great picture. I took it in a hurry, just to remember the moment. I’ve had depression since high school, with some stretches of time darker than others. But I always keep with me the overwhelming, beautiful moments, when I feel free after feeling empty for so long. The first one I kept was about a week after I finally started the right medication. I remember feeling like I could’ve burst from happiness when the heaviness started to fade away for the first time in years, all tears and smiles on my way home from class. This picture is the most recent one. For months, I had felt the familiar, frustrating, aching emptiness around me. But then one day, there I was, in Mona’s car, listening to music and driving to nowhere with my hands out the sun roof in the wind and I felt open, happy, hopeful.. My depression might never fully go away, but it doesn’t mean that I’ll ever forget how beautiful my life is. Mental illness isn’t a reflection of who you are. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it- you’re not weaker for it, and you’re definitely not alone. #BellLetsTalk (at Chicago, Illinois)
