Het oosten, westen en zuiden van het gebied worden afgebakend door immense ravijnen, waarbij aan één kant een rivier zijn doorgang vindt. Een deel van een brug is nog zichtbaar. Er zijn nog fresco’s te bewonderen in de kerk van St. Gregorius. Binnen de oude kerken zijn muren beklad en met krijt beschreven of er zijn in steen namen gegrift; op andere plekjes zijn er nog recentelijk kaarsjes gebrand.” (p. 96)
The ghost city of Ani
AKDAMAR ISLAND (Turkish : AKDAMAR ADASI), also known as AGHTAMAR or AKHTAMAR, is the 2nd largest of the four islands in LAKE VAN, in Eastern Turkey. It is home to the 10th century Armenian Holy Cross Cathedral, which was the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Catholics of AGHMATAR from 1116 – 1895.
