Notable Events: Mystic Falls is officially founded by the Founding Families. In 1863, Stefan Salvatore meets Valerie Tulle at the County Fair and falls in love with her, unknowingly conceiving a child with her before Julian forces her away. Damon deserts the Confederate Army before the Battle of Gettysburg. Valerie later tries to run away with Stefan, but Julian discovers her pregnancy, beats her, and causes her to miscarry—after her failed attempt to save the child with Gemini magic, Valerie dies by suicide with Lily’s blood in her system and awakens as the first Heretic. In 1864, Katherine Pierce arrives in Mystic Falls under the guise of an orphan from the Atlanta fires and begins relationships with both Salvatore brothers while befriending Pearl and Anna. George Lockwood returns from war with the werewolf curse triggered and hides his condition as the town’s vampire suspicions grow. At the first Founders’ Ball, Katherine threatens to expose George’s secret and later bargains with him for her escape. The Founding Families carry out the vampire roundup beneath Fell’s Church, and Emily Bennett uses the comet and her talisman to seal the tomb, saving twenty-seven vampires from the fire while trapping them beneath the church. Giuseppe kills Damon and Stefan while they try to rescue Katherine, unaware she had been feeding them her blood. Stefan completes his transition by feeding on Giuseppe, then forces Damon to complete his own. Emily Bennett is later burned as a witch, Stefan kills Thomas and Honoria Fell as well as Johnathan Gilbert, and Lexi Branson arrives in Mystic Falls, becoming Stefan’s friend. By 1865, Damon burns the town’s vervain and leaves Mystic Falls, asking Lexi to watch over Stefan as Stefan begins the long work of controlling his bloodlust.
