I just wanna put this out there in advance of the third part of the FF7 remake.
I don't want to kill Sephiroth.
I want to save him. Redeem him, even.
I think the story could take a much more compelling twist if, while putting himself back together, Cloud realizes that Sephiroth is in the exact same position he was in: a puppet to a manipulative force seeking humanity's extinction.
Jenova has ALWAYS been the real villain of FF7. Like Lavos and Zeromus before her, she's a truly alien creature, Lovecraftian in her horror before it was widely known as Lovecraftian. She is a Bloodborne villain in a steampunk fantasy setting, and her favorite toy is this bishounen lookin' edgy motherfucker who has managed to convince himself that the horrifying genocide she has been pushing him towards committing is HIS idea.
Sephiroth is just as much a victim as the Cetra who got so paranoid that she was influencing them that they destroyed themselves. The argument could easily be made that Sephiroth is actually LONG dead, the facsimile of him being Jenova's 'public face', but if Zack could be at least temporarily spared, why not a younger, perhaps more heroic Sephiroth?
Beyond all of that, imagine how batshit INSANE it would be to battle some previously unseen True Jenova form with your main party being Cloud, Zack, and goddamn Sephiroth, backed up by the rest of the crew and acting like Aerith's surgical scalpel as she excises Jenova not just from the planet, but from reality itself.
THAT would be a great fucking ending.
