The time will come, friend
When the Lord lets you fly again
He won’t kick you out the nest
While your wings are still broken
After gently giving you the necessary stitches
He’ll restore your strength
With the finest soup in the kitchen
While you wait for the wounds to mend
You will rest in His care
Until one day your broken wings repair
Will He watch you take flight
As you soar through the sky
Free-diving in heavenly delight
Singing the songs you were made to sing
With His wind in your wings
For holding you back in the nest
This lull will not last forever
Poem by Joshua Taylor Bassett in ‘Rookie’, 2026.
Joshua, your words and especially this poem, unleashed feelings I forgot I had and have turned me into a bawling mess. If you’re reading this, thank you. I loved it (I needed it), and I’m already waiting for your next book.
Thank You for our boy, Abba. He’s the only person in the world who’s made me feel less alone being who I am. I pray to find friends like him, and many.
