Culpables
Spanish vs. London Version
Years ago, one of my best friends absolutely loved Mercedes Ron’s Culpables book series, and when I found out the books were being adapted into movies, I had to check them out. I also read the first book, though only the first one, and I'm pretty sure I'll never get around to the rest of the series.
Anyway, back to the movies...
When My Fault (2023) came out, I was thrilled! I genuinely enjoyed the film, loved the Spanish soundtrack and the original language and thought this would surely become one of my new favorite series. Noah and Nick had great chemistry, and even though the story itself wasn't exactly groundbreaking, it just worked for me at the time.
So imagine my surprise when Your Fault (2024) turned out to be, to put it mildly... disappointing. The plot felt significantly weaker, but what really bothered me was the overall ending. Not only did I know the book handled things quite differently, but I simply didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as the first movie.
At that point, I had pretty much lost all interest in returning to the series... but then yesterday I noticed that the second movie of the London adaptation had been released, and I found myself wondering: was it any better? I had to find out.
Of course, I first had to catch up on the first movie, which I hadn't seen in this version, and one of the first things I liked was Noah. I enjoyed Asha Banks' portrayal of her much more. Matthew Broome didn't completely convince me as Nick at first, but after two movies I've gotten pretty used to him.
Since I already loved the first movie before, the London version didn't disappoint me either. In fact, I'd say I might have enjoyed it even a little more (though that may also be because I watched it yesterday, while I saw the Spanish version ages ago).
My hopes that the sequel would also be better rose considerably... and... yeah, in many ways it definitely was. The main storyline that bothered me before is still there, but it's handled a bit better, so I can't say I was outright disappointed.
Well... you can probably guess where this is going.
After getting back into the series, I felt the need to see how the finale, Our Fault (2025), turned out and... I really wish I hadn't.
Ugh...
I just... I didn't like it.
Not only was the chemistry between the main couple completely gone for me, but the scenes themselves felt awkward. I didn't buy any of it, and the whole time I was just waiting to see how they would wrap everything up. I knew how the book ended, but we all know how much movies love changing things.
If they had left out that absolutely absurd ten-minute drama segment at the end, I might, and I really mean might, have considered it average at best. Instead, it was just the final nail in the coffin for this adaptation.
I genuinely laughed at only one scene, the whole "hiding the pregnancy bump" situation, which is ridiculously little for a movie that's nearly two hours long.
Now all I can do is hope that the London version will once again be at least a little better... 🤷🏻♀️
