I don’t understand where people are looking at character assassination for Steve right now. His relationship with Dustin is strained, it’s not like he could act like he usually does. They’re not the duo we saw in the past, they’re different people now. Steve was obviously concerned, he’s the only one who knew he wasn’t injured from his bike, my guys paying attention. He’s also sending him looks to see what’s going on and maybe figure out how to approach him. Steve doesn’t have everything figured out, and he already had complicated feelings about Dustin and Eddie’s relationship, like Dustin was going to replace him. What we’ve seen so far is kind of that in a sense. Obviously, Dustin is devastated over Eddie, and in that he and Steve over time (I assume) developed a complicated relationship.
