Summary: Reader is Puss’s Guardian Angel and has spent a good portion of his lives keeping him safe. However, that all changes when he’s on his last one, and must defend him against the thing who wishes to take it.
“Careful!” You exclaimed, as you held your arm in front of a mother raccoon, stopping her from falling into the rocky river below you. As the woods had become more recently dangerous, especially during the night time, you were helping her make it safely back to her home, after you both left the market with a few small bags of produce.
“Oh my! That was a close one. Thank you so much Angel” She said, while shaking your left wolf paw.
You smiled warmly at her. “Your welcome miss, just promise me you’ll be more in tune with your surroundings from now on” You said, before suddenly looking up, your ears and tail twitching, as you lightly growled at a random part of the woods. Curious, the raccoon looked in the same direction, and when she saw nothing was there she gazed at human/wolf hybrid in worry.
“I..Is something the matter, angel?”
Your gaze softens a little when you look down at her again.
“No I…just thought I saw something. *smile* Come on, I’m sure your children miss you dearly at home, and it’s best not to keep them waiting”
“*smile* Yes, your definitely right”
It took about five more miles until you two finally arrived at her house, which was a small cottage that had flowers and lanterns decorated above and the sides of it. Her children who at minute’s ago decided to wait for her outside, were filled with joy when they saw her walking towards them with you following behind. All three of them nearly made her drop the bags she was carrying as they ran to meet her halfway and hugged her tightly.
“We’re so glad your finally back!”
“The house was getting lonely without you!”
The mother chuckled heartily. “Now, now, settle down. I missed you all too. And it’s all thanks to Ms, Angel that I was able to return here without scratch, so do make sure to thank her”
“Thank you Ms, Angel!” They all exclaimed. Causing you to smile warmly and gush in your head at how adorable and wholesome they all were.
“Your all very welcome. I do hope to see you guys soon, see ya”
You waved them goodbye before walking aimlessly back the same trail you and the mother raccoon took to get here. Pondering on what other creature you’ve sworn to protect you should check in on. While putting you finger and thumb on your chin and drowning out the sounds of your bare wolf feet stomping on the ground’s rubble and the crickets chirping for their mates.
“Hmm…so far my seems to have loosened today. *sigh* So, I guess I’ll finally go check and see how my little prideful feline is doing, especially considering his circumstance right now….”
You snapped your fingers, making a could of smoke appear in front of you. Once you stepped inside it you found yourself in a bar, one you would consider empty had you not seen the cat you were checking in on, sitting against a bar counter and sipping on his eight glass of milk.
“Well, I can’t say I’m surprised to see you here of all places” You said. Your voice and footsteps gaining his attention as you walk over to him and sit down on the chair on his left.
“Ah, (Y/n), it’s lovely to see your face again. Tell me, how have you been doing, Señorita?” He said, not even attempting to hide the flirtatious tone in his voice. But you knew he was merely being playful and didn’t pay any mind to it. Just like you didn’t pay any mind to him calling you (Y/n). A name that he, in the past, decided to forever call you as he believed it fit better than Angel. And you allowed him to do it, because it was a name that you were actually…very familiar with.
“*smile* If you mean besides doing my job and watching over people in need, nothing much really. Though, I’ll admit I have attended a festival or two….” You said, as you grabbed a bottle of Martini from behind the counter and took a sip of it.
“*frown* But my life isn’t something we need to be discussing right now, it’s yours”
“Hm? I…don’t know what you mean” Puss said, while looking back at his drink.
“Puss. You know what I’m talking about”
“*chuckles* Oh, and let me guess, that doctor was the one who told you?”
“No. I am your Guardian Angel, Puss. Which means I already know exactly how many lives you have left now. And even if I didn’t, I have these to tell me…”
As you lay your right arm on the table and pull down the sleeve of your Kimono, two tattoos of white hearts, with a white flame inside, appeared and glowed on your forearm.
“What are those?” Puss questioned.
“They are what I like to call blessings. They are how many times I can step in and protect someone from danger. Usually for others it’s four times, but because you had nine lives, it was nine”
“Then, if you know how many lives I have, why are there two? And how come you never told me about them before?”
“There are two because If you hadn’t forgotten, I wasn’t there to protect you in one of your previous lives. But, seriously, that fish was clearly bad for you so why did you keep eating it?!” You frustratingly exclaimed. Making the feline rear his head back a bit, and chuckle while nervously scratching his cheek.
To cool down, you sighed, before giving him a sad frown.
“Also I didn’t tell you because…I thought you would eventually learn not to be so reckless, and really treasure your lives more. And the I didn’t want the fact that not only have nine lives, but guardian Angel protecting each of them getting to your head and making you believe you were invincible. Which, unfortunately, it already has”
Though he tried not to show, some remorse actually befell onto Puss’s face at your words, as he began sipping on his drink again acting like he didn’t.
“Listen. I know it may seem like I’m talking down to you but I’m really not. I’m just trying to tell you that a life is precious and should never be taken for granted. And I’m telling you this and want you to take it in consideration because not only do you have one left…..but out of all the people I’m looking after….your the one that really reminds my past self”
“Your…past self?” Puss asked, tilting his eyebrow when he glanced at you.
“Yeah, I was….” Before you could finish what you were saying, you both suddenly heard what sound like whistling, throughout the bar. A shiver went down your spine as you gripped onto your fans, that were closed and dangled on your waist, ready to attack. You both look to the left side of the bar where the door was and found nothing there. However, when you slowly look to the right, you see a tall, grey-haired wolf wearing a black hood, sitting one chair away from Puss as the whistle came from his mouth. You never once saw his face before, but you knew exactly who the guy was. Having felt his presence numerous times, including the moment you saved that raccoon mother’s life.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Puss in Boots and…eheh…his darling little angel, in the flesh” He said, as he smirked at you who glared at him, before checking out an empty glass and putting it back down.
“Uh…hey” Puss awkwardly said, he didn’t know why, but he felt uncomfortable in the wolf’s presence.
“There’s the famous hat, the feather, and of course, the boots. My compliments to your cobbler” He says, leaning his head a little too close to the feline.
“T..thanks? Good to meet you, too…”
Puss scooted his chair a little bit closer to yours which made you lift up your tail and wrap it protectively around him, while still glaring at the ominous assailant. Who still found your attempt to threaten him cute and amusing.
“Hey, I never do this but, can I get your autograph? Like your adorable angel here, I’ve been following you for a long time…” Takes out a piece of paper and slides it counter. You both saw that it was one of Puss’s wanted poster’s.
“Sign. Right. There” He said, while tapping on the part that says dead.
“Hahaha, Puss in boots laughs at the face of death. *glare* Bounty Hunter”
“Also, sorry to disappoint you, but he also still has a bunch of time of his life to live. So your really wasting your time here” You said.
“So you say~ But, with how he is now, we both know that’s a lie”
Puss looked between you two, curious on what your words were implying, before deciding to ignore it for now and stand up on his chair.
“You will find that your reward does not come easily, this I tell you”
The wolf playfully rolls his eyes as he grabbed a cup and a bottle of liquor from behind the counter like you did. “Everyone thinks they’ll be the one to defeat me. But no one’s escaped me yet. *smirk* Just ask your angel here, she knows that better than anyone. Right, beautiful?~” He says, while pouring the liquor into the cup.
You glare worsened a little, before looking at the counter in shame and sadness, as memories of your past slowly flooded into your head. Puss hated seeing your face like that, which gave him some more encouragement to fight the wolf.
“Alright, let’s get this over with…” He pulls out his sword. “Fear me! If you dar—!” He was cut off when the wolf, in a split second, knocked the sword out of his hands, which sent it barreling and lodging itself into a nearby barrel.
The sudden action caused you to stop reminiscing and put your hand on Puss’s small shoulder. He looks back at you and sees the protective yet worried look on your face.
“Puss, I think it’s time for you to get outta here, now” You said sternly. Taking your eyes off the wolf to look at him for a minute, before looking up at him again and watching him nonchalantly sip on his drink.
“*chuckles* What? Nonsense (Y/n), Puss in boots never runs from danger!”
“Puss I’m serious you can’t—!”
Despite your warnings, Puss didn’t listen to you and instead quickly hopped down the chair and walked backwards before grabbing his sword. Once he did he charged, leaped, and attempted to stab the wolf in mid-air. But he swiftly moved out the way and had somehow gotten behind you in the blink of an eye.
“Guess who?~” He whispered in your ear, bringing another chill to your spine, as you practically jumped out of your chair, moving atleast three meters away from him and watching as Puss continued fighting.
‘Mierda! He’s faster than I expected him to be. There’s no way Puss is winning this fight against him, at least not now. Right now it seems like the best option is for me to by him some time to run away. Even if…that means I’ll only have one last chance at protecting him’ You thought, before your eyes widened when one of weapons, his sickles, nearly sliced a gash in Puss’s head.
Though he managed to dodge it, it still managed to leave a small cut on him and slice of a few little pieces of his fur. He was so horrified when he touched it and saw his blood staining his paw, that the fur on his arms began to stick up.
The wolf, who could smell his terror, sighed in delight.
“I just love the smell of fear! Especially, when it’s the same kind you felt, angel~” He said, while dragging his sickles on the ground as he slowly walked closer.
“Puss?” You tried getting his attention, but fear had completely overwhelmed him to the point where he barely heard you, and memories of his entire life replayed in his mind.
“What’s the matter? Lives flashing before your eyes” He said, before he stopped walking and kicked his sword towards him.
Puss didn’t listen, and just continued to stare at him and pant in fear.
He couldn’t finish his sentence, when you quickly pressed a button one of your fans, causing a blade to extend out of it, and threw it at his face. While he managed to dodge it, similar to puss, it left a faint cut on his left cheek.
“Run!” You say to Puss, finally snapping him out of his panic attack and doing as he was told, as he immediately grabbed a hold of his hat and ran out the door. After he left, you turn your attention back on the wolf. As you did you took out your other fan and repeated the same action, while also summoning the one you hit him with, back to your hand.
Meanwhile the wolf stared at you, unamused at first, before smirking as he rubbed off the blood on his cheek and licked it seductively off his right thumb.
“Buena niña~ your one of the first people who actually got a scratch on me. And here I was thinking you had gotten rusty over the years” He said, while you both started to slowly circle around each other.
“*glare* Hmp. You know, for the longest I’ve always felt your presence nearby, but yet somehow this is the first time we’ve met face to face, Death”
“Heh, you sound disappointed”
“Annoyed actually, considering what you’ve came here for. While it’s true he only has one life to live and hasn’t been too appreciative of his previous ones. But as I’ve said before, Puss still has some time left to try to value and live the final one he has. And you trying to take it beforehand is very unreasonable”
“Oh~ and what makes you say that? Is it because you believe he’ll turn out like you? Someone who even then didn’t value her life until it was already gone…”
Though his words were true, they still caused you to become angry, and charge and attack him with full force. He used his sickles to parry each slash of your blades, until you saw an opportunity to trip him and make him fall on his back. However that didn’t make the mocking smirk he gave you go away, even as you put your foot on his chest and made one of your blades extend to his neck.
“You don’t have to remind or belittle me about my past, I know full well of all the mistakes I’ve made and have been working my hardest to repent for them!”
You screamed out when he suddenly used his right sickle to slice the back of your achilles, before kicking you away with both his feet. You then tried to defend yourself as he quickly gotten up and started slashing at you. But you ended up getting cut brutally down your left shoulder and chest. Making you drop your weapons and clutch it in pain, and allowing him to quickly holster his left sickle, and grab you by your throat. Pulling you in till your faces were inches apart. You struggled to pry his arm off, as his tight grip made it somewhat difficult to breathe, but it was clear that his strength rivaled your own.
“You can’t be absolutely certain the same can be said for him. Not everyone is like you, angel. And I for one have grown tired of that cat wasting himself and my time away. So…” He slides his other sickle into it’s holster and grabs and lifts up your right arm, showing off your now singular tattoo, as your sleeve falls down.
“You can protect him all you want with the ounce of power you have left, but like it or not, he will have no choice but to face me”
Your eyes widened and your cheeks became tinted red, as he randomly kisses your on your cheek. Before you grunt and attempt to catch your breath when he finally lets go of you. Your eyes gazing at the floor while you did, so when you look up, you were surprised to see he was gone, along with Puss’s sword. You also noticed your wound on your shoulder had finished healing itself, although there was still a faint ragged scar and some blood left behind. But that was the last thing you needed to be focused on right now.
‘I need to hurry and find Puss!’ You thought, as you ran out the bar doors and began your search for the swashbuckling cat.
