Hi. This is me with a giant pencil practically in my own backyard that NOBODY TOLD ME ABOUT. A couple of years ago, my little family started turning our (many) road trips into #weird road trips, stopping at all the fun roadside attractions we can find. (Which makes this pencil basically a travesty.) We dubbed it #findMORweird, and now we're tackling all of New York's best strange stops. (Plus a few along the East Coast as we've traveled south.) Maybe my kid fell asleep at the Avett Brothers’ NYE concert and slept through the final 45 minutes of the show, including the balloon drop. 

I met Gord properly for the first time in the summer of 2010 backstage at a Tegan and Sara/City and Colour concert. Gord was to join Dallas Green onstage to perform the song they did together on the latter's Bring Me Your Love record, and I had brought my family with me to watch the show. My son was toddling his way around the backstage with us in tow when tumbled out in front of Gord. After helping him up and making sure he was OK, he picked up Holden's flung and filthy soother and rushed over the sink to wash it. As he handed back the washed pacifier, I told him that he didn't need to worry about doing that. "Of course I did," he responded

Despite our petulant and fickle fandom, despite our underappreciation of his words and magic, Downie has left an indelible mark on the people he's leaving behind. And though we are all, at times, like silly navel-gazing teenagers, his fading is a reminder that we should not wait for impending tragedy to express our appreciation for the people who shape us.
