Saw this on tl, and I've been thinking about this for quite some time if Togashi intended this to be just a mannerism or is implying something symbolic.

For me personally I see it as the "speak no evil gesture" and / or he is withholding crucial information just like when he was a kid.

I hope sometime in the manga it would finally get revealed since it seemed that it was the deciding factor why he chose the path he took.
