I recently visited Goodsprings, a small town in the middle of the Mojave desert with a small population of approximately 230 people. The town’s saloon was built in 1913 as a social hub for the local miners. Goodsprings was discovered by Joseph Good in the mid-1850s because of its natural spring which is where it got its name, Goodsprings. Later on, a variety of minerals were found which transformed it into a boom town. It reached an estimated 1,000 residents during this time of economic boom. 3 years after the saloon was built, they established a luxury hotel called “Fayle Hotel” which burnt down in 1966 and no longer stands. However, what currently stands in the town is a schoolhouse, the original saloon & general store, a cemetery, a couple houses, and a post office. Though, the history is fascinating, it has a much darker background. In 1942, actress Carole Lombard tragically passed away in an accidental plane crash next to the town. Here is where her husband, Clark Gable, waited 3 miserable days waiting for the news that his wife was okay. He spent his time there, drinking whiskey. In 1915, Paul Coski was shot during a game of poker after getting caught cheating. The three bullets pierced his body and went straight through the wall and the bullet holes are still there till this day. Apart from its history, the town is well known for its presence in the infamous, Fallout: New Vegas (which is my favorite video game).

Peg Entwistle had a hard childhood but despite the troubles, she found enjoyment and peace in acting. She gained recognition from being a stage performer and later moved to Hollywood for something much bigger. She moved into her aunt and uncle’s house in Los Angeles whom already had connections with the entertainment world. In 1932, she was granted a role in the film “Thirteen Women” she believed that it would’ve been her big break, however, a lot of her role was cut out from the final version. Because of this, she sought out other jobs but the Great Depression made it nearly impossible for people to find employment. She started to become hopeless about her future and discouraged. On September 16, 1932, Peg told her uncle that she was going for a walk but instead made her way to the Hollywood sign, climbed the H, and jumped off of it, ending her life. And just a few days after her death, her uncle received a letter regarding a role opened for her about a woman who died of suicide, she never got to see it.

Fingerwaves rose to popularity in the 1920s and carried on through the early 1930s. Women wore these S-shaped waves to express a new sense of freedom and rebellion towards older traditions such as long Victorian hairstyles. The look was mostly made popular by Bette Davis, Clara Bow, and Gloria Swanson.
