Peg Entwistle had a hard childhood but despite the troubles, she found enjoyment and peace in acting. She gained recognition from being a stage performer and later moved to Hollywood for something much bigger. She moved into her aunt and uncle’s house in Los Angeles whom already had connections with the entertainment world. In 1932, she was granted a role in the film “Thirteen Women” she believed that it would’ve been her big break, however, a lot of her role was cut out from the final version. Because of this, she sought out other jobs but the Great Depression made it nearly impossible for people to find employment. She started to become hopeless about her future and discouraged. On September 16, 1932, Peg told her uncle that she was going for a walk but instead made her way to the Hollywood sign, climbed the H, and jumped off of it, ending her life. And just a few days after her death, her uncle received a letter regarding a role opened for her about a woman who died of suicide, she never got to see it.

Fingerwaves rose to popularity in the 1920s and carried on through the early 1930s. Women wore these S-shaped waves to express a new sense of freedom and rebellion towards older traditions such as long Victorian hairstyles. The look was mostly made popular by Bette Davis, Clara Bow, and Gloria Swanson.

In the early 1800s, the temperance movement began to gain traction through religious revivals and protestant churches. The movement supported social reform and it was primarily driven by religious groups and women who were victims of broken marriages and domestic violence. These women aimed to combat societal issues which they blamed alcohol for, they strived to prohibit the consumption of alcohol. Members of the temperance movement also believed that alcohol was the prime factor contributing to poverty, domestic dysfunction, and even crime. On January 17, 1920 a new amendment was introduced which banned the sale and consumption of alcohol. The ban resulted in the rise of illegal speakeasies, bootleggers, and organized crime. Prohibition ended up failing for a multitude of reasons, but more so the rise in crime and the fact that it took $300,000,000 to enforce. It wasn’t until 1933, prohibition had finally came to end.

The start of the Great War saw the demand in watches needed for soldiers. During this time, it was unusual for men to carry wristwatches as it was seen as feminine and men who wore them were typically signaling they were homosexual. Pocket watches, however, were not very efficient in the dark trenches. With the recent rise in Radium based products, they sought to use Radium infused paint to paint the dials on wristwatches to give to soldiers, which had a natural glow when exposed to light. In 1917, corporations such as Radium Corp. began to employ many young women in search of a job. With the soldiers gone and employment opening, it wasn’t hard to get a job but when dial painting came into the picture, every girl wanted it. Unlike an unsafe factory, dial painting offered good pay in a well lit studio. What they didn’t know was that the paint they would be using, would’ve been responsible for the death of numerous girls. Among the girls, the lip point method was very popular which consisted of them licking the brush after it had been dipped in Radium infused paint which later led to necrosis of the jaw. Dr. Sabin Arnold, the founder, knew about the deadly effects of radium exposure but never informed the girls. After numerous deaths, the girls grouped together and sued Radium Corp. and other dial painting companies.
