Brow raised as she set her coat down, bruises covering her body, it had been a rough one. SHIELD usually didn’t send her on the simple missions they had interns for that Gemma got the ones that got dirty. A small sigh escaped her lips, “I doubt your cooking is that bad, Steve.” Gemma smiled a little, “hell, I burned water, literally.” It was sad but true Gemma never had the patience to wait for the water to boil. Or she would get to distracted with something that she’d forget that it was on the stove. “Well, if you don’t want to cook… Maybe we could order Chinese or pizza? I could go for some food and drink.” Looking around, she hoped there was an ice pack or first aid kit.
Unable to help himself, the Captain shook his head in mild amusement. ❝Maybe I AM the one that should be in the kitchen then between the two of us ... and that’s really saying something.❞ Nothing GOOD perhaps, but it was saying it none the less. Crossing his arms over his chest, the blond eyed the woman as she set her coat down and entered the room more fully. Trained eyes spotted the bruises from a mile away, and the smile upon his face slipped just a little. He knew she could handle herself, that wasn’t the issue - but he couldn’t help but NOT like seeing her in pain. ❝We can get whatever you want. As long as you promise to take it easy tonight? How bad was it?❞

Bucky gets a little glassy-eyed when Steve starts talking about modern-day food. “Nutella,” he offers because that’s the best invention of the 21st century (in his opinion). You can pour it over everything: pancakes, bread, crepes, fruits, cake, biscuits, into milk. Or you take a spoon and eat it out of the jar. He shakes himself and tunes back it when Steve praises the merits of the internet. “Wait, do you mean this YouTube thing for porn?” he asks with a grin. “You absolutely mean this YouTube thing for porn.”
With a quick laugh, Steve is forced to nod his head in agreement. It was the stuff of LEGEND if you compared it to what they had once been used to. Nothing felt quite as good as being able to over indulge in something sweet when all you once had were rations. Though it was surely a double edged sword if you allowed yourself to get too far GONE. A bit of self control was necessary in a world such as this. At his next statement, all Steve could do was good heartedly roll his eyes at the other man. He wouldn’t deny that he had STUMBLED upon it on one of his falls down the internet rabbit hole but being a PROPER gentleman, he hadn’t been able to watch for long. It felt too PERSONAL, something NOT for his eyes. ❝Don’t tell me that’s what keeps you up at night. Don’t you have anything BETTER to spend your time on?❞

“NOTHING WRONG WITH A BIT OF BOTH REALLY.“ most of them are like that anyways. not everyone can be like the winter soldier or the goddamn batman and separate the two. dinah herself is known for being a bit impulse, though she had gotten better with age. “I believe in people. Most of us just stumble into life, try to survive. Most are good. Most want to change. It’s the world that keeps pushing them further.“ She had seen it so many times, people who want to do good and all they receive is judgement for their past choices. Or the past literally coming to hunt and haunt them down. Blue eyes shift to stare back at the captain, a gentle shrug spreading over his shoulders. “The world is constantly changing, I think it’s good to sometimes, just keep your ideals as they are. Specially if you are doing good.“ And for that, she reaches, fixing the edge of his crooked jacket and smiles, before leaning into her seat again. “And I think you have done a lot of good, Captain.“
She had a good HEAD on her shoulders it seemed. More sure of herself than he was sometimes and it warmed his heart to see that she agreed with him. Most people WERE good - he knew it in his core. They WANTED to help others, and it was simply the outliers that messed everything up and put things off balance. That’s why the world needed people like THEM - the two that sat across from one another. The HEROES that only wanted to protect those that couldn’t protect themselves. Perhaps, because of how they lived, they didn’t GET the option to change their mind or shift their ideals. Perhaps they were ROOTED in place, stuck in that one section of the good vs evil spectrum and in the end was that a BAD thing? Helped keep things going on as normal he supposed. A thought for a later time, since he had to admit he was a little DISTRACTED as she lent over and fussed with his jacket collar. The small action brought a smile to his lips and with a PUFF of air to simulate a laugh, he dipped his head down to break his eye contact with her. Better to play HUMBLE than to allow himself to blush at her kind words. ❝Well I hate to sound cliché, but it takes a GOOD DOER, to know a GOOD DOER.❞

The smile stayed upon his face, however it melted away from amusement and more so into something more sincere. It was GOOD to have him back. He felt lighter somehow, standing beside his friend. Though he had to shake his head just a little bit, put up SOME kind of fight. That’s just how he was after all. ❝Shouldn’t you be RESTING?❞ He wouldn’t put up much more of a fight than that, but he had to at least TRY.

❝ Yeah, I know. ❞ Because how can he not? He had looked up to him when he was a kid, had the merch to prove his younger self was a nerdy fanboy ( still has some of it honestly ). It had been a far fetched dream come true when he’d gotten these powers and gotten to work alongside his idol, taking after him in who he wanted to be and what he wanted to put forward into the city. It wasn’t easy but he never stopped trying. And never will.
It’s all well and good to push back against those who seem to hate him, but he still didn’t think that always pushing back was a good idea. Working hand in hand with them wasn’t going to happen ( not yet ) so he did his best to avoid them, but still do his job. Prove that he could be trusted, if they just gave him a chance. ❝ …the Avengers? ❞ Another dream he never thought he’d actually get to see or be a part of, something that brings a smile to his face. ❝ I-I mean– yeah, of course! ❞ Of course he’d have them. There’s no question about that. But as he took a moment to think, he lets out a sigh, nodding. ❝ S’pose giving it another shot wouldn’t hurt. ❞ Worst case scenario is that he gets arrested, which he’d like to avoid.
❝And if nothing else, maybe having them SEE you with some of us - fighting along side of us, could be good for the CAUSE. Might have them take some of the heat off of you.❞ People didn’t always take him seriously. Not until he had PROVEN that he was there to help and would do everything in his power to do as much good as possible. Steve didn’t LIKE the idea of the kid being put into dangerous situations, but at least if he was close by, he could HELP if the need arose. Maybe he was worrying too much though - for it was OBVIOUS that Peter could take care of himself. A flaw perhaps in his own character. Always worrying about those that didn’t need it.
❝If you ever NEED anything though, you can always give me a call. You gotta know that. We might not always LOOK or ACT like a family around here ... but we’ve got your back if you’re one of us.❞ And it was true. For what WOULDN’T Steve do for any of the other members if they asked? Hell ... even if they DIDN’T ask. He’d be there, trying his best to come up with a solution to the problem at hand. Always had, and probably always would.
