Fun facts you may have missed in Lord of the flies! (chapter one mainly as that's as far as I've picked through with a fine toothed comb)
(edit: my copy is from 1963-1964 and was printed in the United States for reference. I have read other versions though)
Sorry if the layout of this is shitty I like never use Tumblr. Anyway:
1, piggy says the N-word in like chapter 11 I think. If you didn't catch this and you are from the United States, your copy was censored. Copies sold in the States were changed to 'you're acting like a crowd of kids'. I don't remember the exact non censored line because the only copy I currently own is from like Virginia or something, but the copy I studied in school (Canadian) had him say it.
2, in chapter one page 11, piggy says "Didn't you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb? They're all dead." Implying that at least their hometown (but probably all of England) is more or less destroyed by the time the book is taking place.
3, this one is pretty well known to fans but a disturbing number of teachers I've spoken to got this wrong, lord of the flies takes place during a heated up version of the cold war. It's not really clear whether or not it's officially ww3 but the atom bomb on England paints a notable picture. (Edit: my evidence for this is pg 149 chapter 10: 'Ralph dredged in his fading knowledge of the world. "We might get taken prisoner by the Reds")
4, idk if this is something anyone was actually arguing over but my English class was. Technically Ralph found the conch, piggy just recognizes it's use. (Pg 13 chap 1) "Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds"
That's all for now I'll probably do another post if I find more. I don't know how much of these are things people actually missed but I definitely missed a couple when I first read the book. Feel free to correct me on anything I may have gotten wrong.
