I accidentally did a Wikipedia binge about 1st wave feminism and fashion and stumbled upon the 1890s bicycle suit. Do people know about this? Why didn't anyone tell me about this? This is dope as hell.
It's old-fashioned. It's modern. It's butch. It's femme. It's snazzy. It's practical.
Wikipedia talks about the bloomers and the leg-o-mutton sleeves, but I'm also noticing a lot of these outfits have absolute supervillain lapels, which I also like a lot.
please credit angela clayton for her photo/outfit
the suits have giant lapels because that was the fashion of the time, even outside of the bicycling suit. they go with the giant sleeves and full skirt/pants to make the waist look tiny. you see them on women's jackets of the time worn with skirts. there was a general menswear inspired look that had been trending since the 1880s. there were two major subgroups of western women's fashion going concurrently: menswear inspired tailormades, and really INTENSELY feminine dresses; so you'll also see fluffy ruffled explosions of chiffon and bows in fashion plates.
Oh, those look fantastic! (And thanks to the commenters for the link to Angela Clayton's youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4P2VAMnCSM )
Oh, yeah, this was just me doing an informal binge of Wikipedia and DuckDuckGo image search. Thanks for the info!
And thanks to @bells-n-keys for mentioning Bikes and Bloomers by Kat Jungnickel in the comments!

Heartfelt conversations over spaghetti are the best kind. Or maybe the worst in Jeremyβs case.
Anyway this disability pride month I would like to shoutout disabled folks whose creativity has suffered because of their condition. Iβm talking people with hand tremors and pain that stop them from drawing, knitting, and playing instruments. People whose thinking has become so disorganized that nothing they write makes sense to other people. People with chronic pain who can no longer dance. People so over medicated in a fruitless attempt to maintain stability that the wells of their imagination have run dry.
I see you and I love you. You are more than your creative output. You are not a shell of what you used to be. You are a whole, complete person, regardless of what your creativity has been, is now, or will be in the future.
Arrest everyone involved.
Money saved: maybe a couple million dollars.
People killed: around three quarters of a million.

this fourth of july I am coming out as a hater about fireworks. no more fireworks. fireworks are neither necessary nor good. they kill and harm birds and wildlife, they pollute the air, they are loud and unpleasant, they terrify my dog, and they trigger people's PTSD. I hate fireworks. can we please not do fireworks anymore
"You didn't have to slit my throat on the way out." Oh jean...
The more I think about the differences between how the Trojans show affection vs how the Foxes do, the more I come to the conclusion that they unwittingly created the perfect environment for Jean and Neilβs arcs respectively.
Take for example the way Cat and Laila show Jean affection. The forehead kisses, the hugs, the endless reassurance and compassion. It may go without saying but Neil wouldβve hated it if he ended up in that situation. He wouldβve booked it faster than you can say Wesninski. But Jean? I mean sure he was baffled at first, but the way he grows to lean into it? The way he shows affection the same way back? Jean needed that brand of affection in a way Neil wonβt ever. He needed to learn that he was deserving of such love; that there are people out there now who cared about him as deeply as he does them.
Neil on the other hand needed to learn a whole different set of lessons. The Foxes showing him that they care was less such obvious displays of love and more about patience in the face of his complications. More about their willingness to stick by him when the fabricated life he clung so hard to unraveled at the seams. Jean wouldnβt have flourished as much in that environment because he didnβt need understanding as much as he needed love. He didnβt need someone to help piece his life back together as much as he needed someone to love what was already there.
Neil is like an innocent looking stray cat that the foxes still kept even when they got bit; while Jean is like an abused show dog that the Trojans nurse back to health. And good lord do I love them both for it.
heβs on his way there already but just. loving the idea of jean becoming unrecognizable to the ravens who thought they knew himβhim getting stronger and healthier in california so his build changes, so far removed from the nest that he has no injuries or bruising for the first time in their collective memory. him standing tall next to jeremy on the court, no longer slouched over to conceal an injury or to make himself less of a target. jean getting a haircut he likes that flatters his features and makes him feel good. him getting so much sun that he gets freckles in a way he hasnβt since he was a child, smiling and laughing with his friends on the sidelines of a game. if it werenβt for the tattoo theyβd think he was an entirely different person, and he kind of is, free in a way heβs never been before, and it suits him so beautifully
this is a book series that will have you rocking back and forth and ripping your hair out and bashing your skull into a wall but then you have to look someone directly in the eyes and say yeah itβs about a fake sport with fake drugs and also the yakuza is involved

Jean is also feral and Neil also endures, the forever partners forever same hat
The way the found family in this book just absolutely bitchslapped me
Jean and Cat is my absolute favorite dynamic from TGR
Coach Rhemann trying his best to support Jean but also trying to figure out if some oddities are result of:
abuse from his time in the nest
a French thing
just his personality
Coach Wymack is the only one he knows with experience of helping a former Raven de-transition from the Nest so he'll occasionally call Wymack and give a vague statement to try to see if Wymack has dealt with this with Kevin, while not giving too much away in case it's just a Jean thing.
-
Rhemann: So... some of my kids decided to take classes together, really stick to a buddy system sort of deal
Wymack: Yeah. It's a thing. Kevin's gotten better but he still gets anxious if he's alone.
-
Rhemann: Some of my players are really excelling in language arts. Which is great for their grades, but their imaginative descriptions really toe the line between feedback and a yellow card.
Wymack: Jean, right? Kid speaks three languages that I know of and I think he's most adept at insults in all of them. He had more than a few choice words for me and my team when he was out here.
-
Rhemann: A good thing about California is that it hardly ever rains.
Wymack: That's a good thing? Thought you guys were dealing with a drought.
Rhemann: Yeah, but sunshine and good weather most of the year. People don't have to worry about slick roads or getting wet.
Wymack: I guess?
Rhemann: Water.
Wymack: Hmm, yeah, not sure where you're getting at with this one. Whatever it is, I don't think mine had it.
I'm not even gonna say anything
Oh jerejean π

nora tweets that make me feel fucking insane: exhibit a
which brings me to this scene:
jean resorting to this type of blunt, nonverbal communication is so similar to andrew too,,
it kills me that he has no idea how funny he is
