It was a 100% essential accommodation for my disabilities. I was an autistic kid with anger issues, SEVERE anxiety and very sensitive to noise and stimuli

I also can't stress enough that USA public schools are the deepest pits of hell. like yes kids are graduating barely able to read and write (not an exaggeration, this was discussed by the education majors in my YA lit class) but also a major reason for homeschooling is bullying and specifically Black parents have been increasingly turning toward homeschooling because of violent racist bullying and attacks

In college I was put in a program for the most academically advanced top % that had special courses for students in the program and I was excited because they were supposed to be more discussion based and engaging.

Every single "advanced" course bored me to tears. It wasn't the material. It was that nobody wanted to participate in discussions or really talk about ideas and things they were learning. They would ask how to study for tests and whether something was going to be on the test and apart from that they would just stare blankly when the profs tried to prompt discussion. They had a very strange way of doing projects—picking out "key words" from a text and finding ways to cram them into sentences.

It remind me of studying for ACTs where you were timed and given passages that were too long to read that fast so you were supposed to skim the passages for "key words" and stuff and answer questions without reading carefully.

The best discussions happened in my gen eds where it was just a bunch of random students looking to knock out a requirement. Those classes were full of people who were thoughtful and engaged when something interesting or cool came up.

Many of my college peers struggled a lot with the transition from high school to college because their behavior and schedules had been controlled so much, they didn't know how to handle having deadlines or how to organize their time without someone breathing down their neck telling them exactly what to do
