It’s white and fluffy and sweet, and it’s driving Dean to absolute distraction. He can’t even concentrate on his pie, damnit (and this is some truly fine apple pie).

Cas is committing a crime against pie by sitting there, perfectly innocent with his whipped cream lips, being distracting. Dean won’t stand for it.

To be exact, he won’t sit for it.

“Cas, you’ve got-” Dean says, already half on his feet so he can lean over the table. Cas looks at him, brow furrowed in confusion for a moment before melting into happiness as Dean cups his cheek.

Dean still feels that special thrill, the newness of it all, as he closes the distance for a quick kiss. He brushes his tongue briefly over the corner of Cas’s mouth, catching that errant bit of whipped cream. The sweetness bursts on his tongue as Cas opens his mouth for the kiss, and what was meant to be a quick smooch lingers.

Sam clears his throat pointedly.

We know that Supernatural has a history of inserting the names of its writers and producers within the show, as little in-jokes - mostly memorably with Carver Edlund, in-universe author of the Supernatural books, in reality the surnames of Jeremy Carver and Ben Edlund, two main writers on the show.

We also know that this year, fan-favourite (heh) producer and writer, Bob Singer, has been billed only as a consulting producer on the show. That is to say, his influence over the show is perhaps not as strong as it once was.

Knowing these two things, I can’t help but wonder about this line. Bob Singer’s answers to fan questions at cons generally indicate a tendency towards a bros-only, arguably misogynistic and even homophobic attitude towards the show. (”it’s just where the story took us!”, anyone?) And in the past few seasons, under his guiding hand, Dean has remained carefully distanced from any long-term relationships, with even his emotional bonds to his brother and to Castiel being sorely tested - constantly fighting with Sam, and very rarely interacting with Cas.

Now, with Bob’s powers apparently on the wane, we have a season in which, within the space of four episodes, Cas calls Dean to check he’s OK, Dean calls Cas back to check he’s OK, Cas goes to Dean and Sam for help when he’s hurt, Dean and Sam do everything they can to help Cas because he’s hurt, Dean has an extended phone call with Cas whilst fighting a monster and Cas tries to help him by researching the lore….. the bond is being seen again. 

And in the midst of all this, comes this conversation: Sam asking Dean if he’s ever considered something, with a gender-neutral someone.

But we disbelieve it, as watchers, don’t we? Dean, in a relationship that lasts? Dean, thinking about settling down with someone who understands him, and the hunter life? Have you not watched the last few seasons? Have you not heard a single word Bob’s been singing about?
