I hate this f*cking show so much...
Because why did I just have another lightbulb moment seeing a teaser from season 2 that I had never seen before?
Remember when I talked about Carmy and the hole in the wall (in my dirty movie series) and how I pointed out that it looked like he was saying "do me a favor keep thinking about her?" with the articulation of his lips?
Tell me why the teaser actually shows Syd on the other side of that hole in the wall. She's the only one that was filmed that way. She's the other side of what Carmy is looking at enraptured. OMG, the symbolism!!
Let me recap this as my stream of consciousness would allow.
Sydney "fell through the wall" as it was described in the episode. Carmy then displays an interesting amount of interest in that hole, gazing longingly through it, asking Nat or us (remember this was filmed as a breaking the fourth wall) to do him a favor and keep thinking about it(her).
In the teaser, Syd is shown from the other perspective, on the other side of the wall which she fell through (she's also holding a hammer so maybe she broke through?) and she's wearing her Sundae outfit, which is what she wore for the "work date" that never happened.
Is anybody seeing what I'm seeing? Of course, with Storer it could mean nothing but surely you see the symbolism here, no?
@otherworldlyfatevoyage I'll in fact keep going.
You know how the "real world" and the "fictional world" are two different universes? When a character breaks the forth wall we can assume they are basically accessing a portal between both worlds, so accessing an alternate reality.
At the risk of sounding really loony, hear me out:
Carmy is accessing a portal when he looks into that hole. Into an alternate reality. One, it's us the viewers who are looking at and observing him and them. Like i said in my dirty movie meta, the audience's role is voyeuristic by nature, which is why breaking the forth wall is always very jarring. The characters are not supposed to know we are there.
Fleabag and the priest break the fourth wall
The character breaking the fourth wall is an attempt to quantum leap and establish a direct connection with the outside world.
In the case of Carmy, he's accessing two universes in that instant. Our world and this alternate reality where Syd is more than just his sous chef. He wants another life with her that exists outside the restaurant. That's why he looks through the hole to break the fourth wall as opposed to just directly breaking the fourth wall like Richie and Tiff did in season 3.

It's not just the two universes as stand alones. It's a universe within a universe; the one they are planting inside our minds. They laid those seeds on purpose. Carmy makes a plea to us to keep thinking about it (her) because only to those who are really looking and really thinking about it (her) would that story eventually make sense. Jeremy talked about how there's a different story that the audience is telling or creating that is outside the story they know is being told so far, but I think that is deliberate. They know exactly why we weave that story because they put it there.
We have to pay attention to the way language is used in this show:
Sydney fell through a wall would indicate that she fell through to the other side but she doesn't really fall through the wall. It's a symbol for that version of her that Carmy desires to gain access to that fell through the wall and is on the other side, also trying to break through to him(just like us).
I don't even know if I'm making sense at this point. I wish I could have made this reblog as a stand alone post.
I don’t have a screenshot, but I remember someone pointing out that in S2E4, as Natalie tells Carmy that she’s pregnant, the office wall falls down and Carmy’s eyes immediately go to Sydney, even though everyone else is also standing on the other side. He even looks back and forth from Natalie’s stomach to Sydney.
Richie’s yells soon after, “I f**king knew it!” after everyone congratulates Natalie, as if to say that he picked up on Carmy liking Sydney (and we are shown that he pucks up on something between them at the end of S3E3).
