so the general gist i've got from noah wyle in his recent interviews is:
from season 3 and onwards they're looking to shorten the time skips in seasons as much as possible (realistically) to keep the ensemble cast together for as long as they can as they're hyper aware it's like a revolving door but don't want to lose too many too fast
they want to focus more on the characters more so than current events in hospitals as they're aware/realising people are attatched to these characters and want to evolve their storylines further
