The overwhelming panic that filled Jaime as he watched his best friend fall apart as soon as waking from his sleep had no comparison. All he could bring himself to do immediately after was wrap his arms around the smaller, holding him cautiously and gently against his chest. His hand slowly tapped a tattoo on his back, attempting to sooth the other with its timid rhythm. When the sobs began to shake Bart's shoulder, Jaime promptly stopped his tapping and instead opted for rubbing slow, calming circles over his back.

For once, the Scarab knew to keep quiet. Perhaps it understood that this was something humans knew how to communicate to each other, but Jaime didn't question it. He simply allowed himself to be an anchor for Bart.

He brushed a gentle kiss to Bart's eyebrow, tracing his thumb gently over the curve of his face. "I can absolutely stay, alright? Don't you eve worry about it." He pressed another soft kiss to Bart's cheek, lingering there. "You won't be alone, I'm right here, alright? Right here, safe, with you. You're safe, you're here. There's no overlords ruling over us. We're free--I'm not on mode, I'm here, completely in control of my actions and good."

One minute.”

I’m being concerned. You nearly blasted Cassie through the wall with that stunt.” Bart squinted at Jaime’s back, at the hood covering about where the beetle would be resting, and flickered his gaze back to the boy’s face. “I just want to make sure you had it under control, y’know? I don’t want my friends getting hurt, even if it’s just a slip-up in training.”

The older shot a look back at Bart, pausing in the hallway. “You think--you think that I would let the Scarab hurt her?” For some reason, that stung more than the newest member assuming that the Scarab helped him fight her. He felt his arms stiffen and the crackling voice in his mind began to speak once more, alerting him to the other young justice members down the hall.

“Listen, gringo,” he paused once more, taking a deep breath. “Cassie knows how to handle herself. I know how to handle myself. “I have it all under control and I don’t really need you pilfering around wherever you can think to, just to make sure I was in control. Step off.”
