New song from Jurassic 5 - The Way We Do It
Last week, we heard San Francisco producer Mykill and The Holy Coast member Keith Walkerâs daydream inducing gem Without Time. Over the weekend, the duo unveiled a tasty new track. Back Again is an ambient, warm electronic jam, replete with mesmerizing vocoder and some buoyant, incandescent production with hints of Balearic and tropical house flavors. While weâre at it, letâs let ourselves drift languidly away to Mykill and Walkerâs Without Time again, below!

The GTO's. An girl group from the late 60's that Franz Zappa had some hand in. Mostly forgotten these days. They were kind of like the Spice Girls on acid.
When progressive rock bands get music right
I've got a love/hate relationship with progressive rock. On one hand, I love it's originality and musicianship, and on the other I dislike it's excesses and overly manicured sound. Progressive rock reached its peak popularity in the 70's and 80's. It's easy to hear the evolution of progressive rock out of the late 60's psychedelic and hard rock music, the influence of disco, and it's gradual evolution and split in to 80's glam rock and new wave. It's a flawed genre, but one that produced a few masterpieces. Here I will feature a few of my favourite progressive tracks:
Dharma For One - This Was (1969) - Jethro Tull
From The Beginning - Trilogy (1972) - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
An unusually restrained and beautiful song for Emerson, Lake & Palmer, one of the few tracks by them I truly enjoy listening to.
Any Colour You Like (BBC Live 1974)Â - The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) -Â Pink Floyd
I adore the energy and intensity Pink Floyd brought to the live performances of this song. An especially good recording of it can be found on the 1975 bootleg Echoes in the Garden
The Wall - Leftoverture (1976) - Kansas
Some Other Time - I Robot (1977) - The Alan Parsons Project
A great symphonic track, incorporating effects, orchestra and synths very effectively.
Lay It On The Line - Just a Game (1979) - Triumph
Good lord, the guitar solo in this song. Face-melting.
Land of Confusion - Touch (1986) - Genesis
A decent song on it's own, Genesis really nailed it with the music video here.
Long Black Road - Zoom (2001) - Electric Light Orchestra

My friend Matt has just released a new EP with his band Weaselface. I have to say, of all his music I've listened to, this is definitely my favourite, and some of his best work. Fox Lake Incident is a great song. Keep at it!

Neil Young was born in Toronto, Ontario.
Creeque Alley - Deliver (1967) -Â The Mamas and The Papas
The Mamas and The Papas' Denny Doherty was born in my hometown, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He played the "Harbourmaster" on the children's program Theodore Tugboat which was set in the seaside city.
Sundown -Â Sundown (1974) -Â Gordon Lightfoot
Gordon Lightfoot was born in Orillia, Ontario.
Summer in the City -Â Hums of the Lovin' Spoonfull (1966) -Â Lovin' Spoonfull
The electric piano part of this song is absolutely gorgeous. Lovin' Spoonfull's  Zal Yanovsky was born in Toronto, Ontario.

Steppenwolf's John Kay was born in Germany and emigrated to Waterloo, Ontario.

Good things come unexpectedly
Oh joy- my fifth Tumblr follower! And it turns out they're this cool electropop indie band from New York. They make music about Charles Manson (difficult subject matter, but bare with me). They remind me a bit of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, after they went "synthie", or maybe Bloc Party, after they went "synthie" or maybe even Metric, after they went "synthie".
