So u have a question, what’s the word for racoon in Acadian French? Because like the word for racoon is Chaoui/Shawi in La French and La Creole; it comes from Chahta(Choctaw). I’m going to assume y’all’s word for it is not that lol. Is it also raton laveur like they say in France and Quebec?
Ey!! 🧡 for us in some regions it’s Mascouèche or Marchouèche :)
It must’ve been influenced by the Mi'kmaq word for raccoon: amaljugwej (or amaljigwej). Pronounced a-mal-chu-gwech.
The mal-chu-gwech pronunciation must’ve been sounded out in Acadian dialects to make it ‘mascouèche’, as my best guess, I’m by no means a speaker of L’nui’simk.
But yeah usually most people nowadays in Acadian and Quebec communities just call them raton-laveurs. But you know what, I’m going to really try and adopt a lot more older Acadian words and phrases in my every-day use. It deserves to be celebrated 🌟💙🤍❤️
