Some days it really amazes me just how well Fay (my 1 y/o dog) understands language. Sure, she's a smart breed, but the way that goes beyond recognising the words I've been teaching her specifically, indicator words like 'outside' or 'sit' or 'weave' is something I'd never really imagined.

Surely everyone has seen a 'talking dog' at least once now, and while I never believed dogs would be able to hold full on conversations, I figured conditioning a dog to hit the 'outside' button when they want to go outside made sense. So I got Fay some buttons that could record some words and were easy for her to press.

At first, she dragged them all around the house, even reprogramming the noise to be just static, so I took them away. Recently, I've been reintroducing them, and she's taken to them quite well.

One of her buttons says 'help' and right now that's mostly used when her toy is in a place she can't reach. Sometimes it's difficult to figure out though, because she has also used that button to immediately run towards the door to go outside, or just when she's bored. A lot of it is still guessing.

Today, however, she hit it and came to me. I went through my regular questions, like "Help where?", which sometimes leads to her walking to a certain tool I use to fish things from underneath the couch, and "outside", to which she usually responds by barking and walking towards the door if that's what she wants.

This time, she sat down next to me, quietly (quiet? Fay? Yeah, apparently it happens XD). When I asked her again "Help where?" she licked her lips and swallowed hard. That prompted me to check her water bowl and guess what? It was empty!

So I filled it and walked back inside, where she still sat waiting. "Water," I said, with the gesture that we use to indicate water (yep, I use sign language for my doggo! Along with vocal cues. Works wonderfully!) "Water is in the kitchen (another indicator word!). Go look."

I talk to her a lot. Ever since she was little I've been narrating with such commands or indicator words. So she'd be barking and scratching at the couch, and I'd say 'help' and help her get the toy.

Along with that, whenever she'd ask for attention, I'd use those indicator words 'outside' and 'water' and later also 'help' to see if any got a reaction, and if so I'd follow up with them. So a reaction to 'outside' would lead to me opening the door, etc. reinforcing that word as more of a request than a narration (a 'what will happen' as well as a 'what is happening', kinda).

When I was relatively sure she understood the connection between the word and the action, I introduced the button. First by just pressing it myself whenever she'd reacted to a word, and then I'd tell her 'press the button' (but that doesn't quite work, unfortunately XD).

She's now spontaneously using it herself. It's not completely reliable, especially the outside one, but it helps a bit :3 and we're both still learning ^^

Also, what exactly is this supposed to add? If I want to check out the source, I now have to look up the name in a long list of names with most likely double names and years. Compare that to finding a unique number.

So he's MORE LIKELY to grow up to be an adult who doesn't lose multiple jobs due to forgetfulness if he's given the opportunity to learn those tactics with a safety net as a kid.

Scar, on the other hand, is a diplomat. He never thinks about forming a team because his assumption is that everyone he meets is going to be nice to him. His charisma is high enough that this is true way more often than not. Even when he is being a chaos gremlin, he tends to get away with it for much longer than he probably ought to because he is funny and charming and just a little bit intimidating. He doesn't consider people he makes deals with to be teammates because he doesn't see the world in terms of teams, but as a network of shifting relationships. He is surprised and annoyed when the web starts getting sticky, with various friends starting to want him to fight other friends.

Grian believes that loyalty deserves loyalty, and that if you are someone's teammate you protect each other no matter how you feel. Scar believes that friendship is what it is, and that relationships can ebb and flow with time and circumstance. Note that in Third Life, newly-red Scar seeks to reestablish a friendship rather than confirm that Grian is still loyal to him, and that in Double Life, Grian justifies his secret soulmate by rationalizing that the relationship will in the end also benefit Scar by keeping them safe. Note also that in Last Life and Double Life Scar wanted to live alone but work together and Grian was not at all on board with that because you can trade and borrow and joke from separate bases but you can't really protect one another.

There is always going to be friction in their alliances because Scar wants a buddy and Grian wants a teammate and those two things are not always compatible at all. It's going to be the same thing with Hermitopia because the more Grian tries to loop Scar into the team, the harder Scar is going to fight to get away, while at the same time Scar is very unlikely to actually take sides against the Hermits because they are his friends. Neither of them can get what they want from each other because neither of them have figured out how to make the other understand what it actually is.
