I danced and kissed my fiancée, the man I would marry in two days. But I couldn’t stop thinking of another man, I couldn’t stop thinking of Jack.
As I took shots and drank as I felt the weight of it take over, had I rushed things with my fiancé? I met him so soon after Jack, was I just scared? Scared to be alone.
Victoria could sense something was bothering me as I kept shots going and made distance with my fiancée. My body felt warm, and I could feel the alcohol in my system as people walked up, congratulating me. I could feel my head pounding to the music someone had put on as people began to dance, the room began to spin as all I could think about was…Jack.
I had to get out of this bar, the same bar where I had met Jack, the bar where we had our first date after he had a hard day, the same bar where he kissed me. The same fucking bar he told me he would be waiting for me before I left.
I stumbled my way out of the bar as the cold air hit my face, and I finally breathed. As the air filled my lugs I thought for a moment, this was ridiculous. I would be marrying the man of my dreams, the man who didn’t just want sex, he wanted me, who didn’t make me feel like I was competing with a ghost. A man who would choose me.
I took a deep breath, cleared my throat, and walked back into the bar.
The night before the wedding
My bridesmaids had come over as we had some wine and laughed. They all were so happy for me and sad that it was my last day being unmarried.
We laughed and celebrated, but Victoria had watched me all night. She noticed how quiet I was when my friends talked about me leaving for London. When I took online classes, they all questioned it, but I gave a vague answer.
Barely anyone knew of Jack, of course, only Victoria, but Jack was a man twice my age, and we were just hooking up and going on dates. He didn’t ever plan to meet my family or my friends.
“Hello?! Our bride-to-be?” My friend snapped her fingers in front of me as I looked up, “Sorry, just…thinking” I looked around as I smiled before looking at Vic
She didn’t say anything, just looked at me as if she knew what I was thinking, and who I was thinking about.
“You are so lucky you know, the first of us to find the love of her life and of all places in London, I always thought you would find him at like a bar or something.” One of the other bridesmaids said as she looked around giggling as I smiled “I got lucky.”
“Ugh didn’t you say like one of the first few dates in he took you to the garden pride and prejudice was filmed. Literal dream date, I remember when you first got the book, you said it was a gift from someone.” Another bridesmaid spoke as I nod
Jack had gotten me the special edition book after he caught me watching the series, then we watched the movie together, I never knew where that book went
I stood up for a moment and said, “I need some water.” I excused myself as I made my way to the kitchen, I stood by the counter trying to gather my thoughts, I should feel like I’m on cloud nine and be excited to get married, but instead I felt suffocated and confused. And all I could think was how Jack would take the news, did he know?
I heard steps coming closer as I took a deep breath when Victoria came in “you okay?” Her voice with concern as I nod “Ya—ya peachy.” I grab a cup from the cabinet before walking to the fridge to get water.
“Youve be acting off for a bit.” Vic looked at me with concern as I looked back at her “Just the wedding is tomorrow, that’s all and I still have so much to do.” I sighed before taking a sip of water avoiding her gaze as she nodded “right of course.” She smiled.
I woke up to the sound of my alarm and my head was pounding,I got way to drunk last night, I gather myself out of bed nearly falling as I reach for my phone.
Today was it, today I would marry the man of my dream…right because the man I am engaged to and will marry in the next few hours has to be my dream husband. I did everything right, I acted right, he loves me.
As I gathered myself for the day victors walked in, she had slept over to take me to the venue. She had everything ready and the car was packed
We didn’t speak much in the car ride, as the radio played some new pop song. I sat there as the singer sang as if the song was meant for me, as she repeated the line “Stop the wedding.” I sat up straight as I listened to the lyrics before Victoria parked in the lot and stopped the car.
I looked at her as she took a deep breath “next time we’ll be in the car, you’ll have a different last name and be married.” She smiled at me before getting out as I sat there for a moment thinking, and everything in my brain told me my soon to be husband was the one but my heart hurt just thinking about marrying him.
Victoria gathered the bags when I got out the car and got my dress, it was a simple dress not the dream one I had in mind since that would be far to expensive. As we met up with the venue planner as she escorted us to the bride suite. Where my mother already was with my hair stylist was as she had me take a seat since the hair would take a while
As guest began to arrive and drinks were served the ceremony was coming closer and closer as I had my hair and makeup done, all I needed left was my dress. But the moment the dress was on and tightened I felt like I was suffocating and my legs felt unstable as I took a seat. Trying to reason with my head and heart, it was just nerves every woman gets this feeling before she walks down the aisle.
I told myself this over and over and before I knew it I had made it to me walking down the aisle. I took slow steps with each breath as I noticed all eyes on me, as I saw my husband to be waiting for me at the end, but instead I imagined Jack waiting for me there and all I could hear was that song from this morning. As I froze, slowly retreating my step.
People looked around as I tried to find some excuse “I just…I forgot something we can restart.” I smiled as I walked back with Victoria following me
I walked back to the front where nobody could see me as I sat down as tears began to fall “Hey, hey what—what’s wrong.” Victoria tried to comfort me as I shook my head
“Stop the wedding.” I cried “Stop the wedding? But the venue is set and the guest are waiting.” She tried to reason with me as I shook my head “for all I care you can burn this dress. Stop the wedding.” She looked at me and sighed reaching for her dress pocket “this is about Jack isn’t? I— he got you this.” She handed me a ring box. “He came to the party at the bar, told me told me to give you the ring and say it was from me.” She sat down next to me as I looked at the ring as tears fell down landing on my dress “I can’t do this Vic.” I stood up as she tried to stop me “Are you sure about this?” I didn’t say anything to her as I started walking towards the aisle as I looked at everyone.
“I can’t do this.” I felt my body shaking “stop the wedding.” I looked at the man I was to marry. “I am not this good girl, who talks and acts like the woman you fell in love with.” My mother looked at me as I knew she would try to reason with me as I felt the need to leave.
“I’m sorry.” I took off running in my wedding dress as I rushed to find any keys as I grabbed victorias as rushed to her car not carrying that my dress stuck out as I drove to Jacks home.
I rushed to his door knocking and praying for an answer. It was still early enough where his shift shouldn’t have started but knowing him he probably went early.
Rushing back to the car I made my way to the hospital.

I knew it was today, Victoria and Mateo weren’t here. I had worked a couple of hours for the day shift, but Michael had insisted I take a break. As I stood at the top of the building listening to the sounds of Pittsburgh.
I let the air fill my lungs as I took a deep breath when I heard the door open then close “I’ll be down in a moment.” I sighed “don’t even you have been working like a mad man go home Jack.” Micheal’s voice sounded with concern “You’re either gonna kill yourself being here or jumping off this building.” He walked closer leaning against the railing “And I’m not trying to clean up any of your messes, literally.” I laughed at him shaking my head
We stood in silence “today’s the day huh?” He looked at me as I nod, looking down for a moment “Yup, she’s married now.” I clear my throat trying desperately to act like it didn’t kill me to say those words. Micheal sighed nodding “Look go home man, you have so many vacation days, use them, get a cat, go on a trip. I don’t know, but just…take a break.” I rolled my eyes “You’re not exactly one to talk Dr. Robinavitch.” He sighed as his radio started going off “I have to head back, but seriously man. Take a break”
He walked away as I took shook my head closing my eyes, maybe he was right. She was someone’s wife now.
I stood their thinking before I heard the door open. “if Robby sent you to check that I hadn’t jump, tell him I did.” The door closed at I heard the person step closer “I’ll make sure he hears.” My head snaps back at her voice as I go back on right side of the railing “Aren’t you supposed to be partying with your husband and in-laws.” I looked at her, her dress was ruined, her hair was a mess and the tear strings noticeable from her makeup, and all I could think was how beautiful she was.
She hesitated for a moment before raising her left hand with no ring “should be.” She repeated as I looked at her as she showed her right hand that held the same box I had kept in a drawer for years, the box I had planned to give her two days ago. I took a sharp breath “I’m guessing Dr. Javadi told you.” I looked down as she nod “Vic gave me it right before I decided to call it off.” She shrugged “I’m guessing that probably played in some part.” She smiled at me. god I missed that smile and laugh, she took a step closer as I shook my head “I’m sorry for how I acted and how we ended things.” I felt my voice being to shake
As my eyes began to water “I waited every Saturday, in the same booth we had our first date, hoping one day you would come back.” I smiled as she reached for my cheek “I am far to old for you now, you know?” I tried to joke as she smiled with a soft expression “I think we already knew that way before I got engaged to.” I leaned down slightly hesitantly
I couldn’t help but take in her beauty as I looked at her “You’re beautiful.” I leaned down to kiss her as our lips connected as if puzzle pieces fit perfectly as I reached for her neck to pull her in more before slowly moving my hands down to her waist as her fingers reached for my hair
We pulled away for air as I slowly grabbed the box her and opened it, “We can wait as long as you want but…this is my promise to love and care and treat you right.” I looked at her as she looked up at me and nod raising her hand for me to slip the ring on her finger before she pulled me back down for a kiss
As I moved a piece of hair out of the way as she giggled. She pulled away “I heard Micheal basically gave you the night off.” She smiled up at me as I knew what she was implying “He sure did sweets, and I know exactly what I will be doing tonight and all of my vocation, making it up to you. I kissed her again slowly and softly before reaching for her hand spinning her around to have her back against my chest as we looked our to the city as the sunset fell.
I kissed her heard as she leaned into my embrace and I knew this was it, I would spend eternity making it up to her but this was where we needed to be.
This was right, this is where we both belonged, together.
Thanks to the two people who also made me think of writing this fic 😭 @gennywennypenny @prose-before-hoes
