I do like that this pandemic has got us all greeting each other like Jane Austen characters- “You are well, I hope? And your family? All in good health?”
“What is it that the child has to teach?
The child naively believes that everything should be fair and everyone should be honest, that only good should prevail, that everybody should have what they want and there should be no pain or sadness. The child believes the world should be perfect and is outraged to discover it is not.
And the child is right.”
— Rabbi Tzvi Freeman

my singing voice is good for showers and mornings in the kitchen and drunken nights and lullabies for babies who need sleep and im okay with this
i think it’s silly to be ashamed of your art because it’s not in a museum and of your voice because it’s not selling out stadiums. there will always be people who enjoy and appreciate what you can do.
Idk why but this hit me really hard and I’ve been staring at it for a couple minutes.
OK AMERICA you have 24 hours to celebrate Joe Biden winning but after that I better see you all pushing for reforms and working to make sure he doesn’t stray even further right.
CONTINUE to fight for BLM and the abolishment of police
CONTINUE to defend immigrants’ rights and work to abolish ICE detention centers
CONTINUE to demand a better response to climate change, not just by revoking the changes trump made but by further addressing the issue
CONTINUE to speak out against US foreign intervention and unnecessary wars
CONTINUE to speak for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, POC’s rights, etc.
CONTINUE to demand healthcare reform
Remember, Biden is a centrist at BEST. he does not have your best interests at heart, and he will do his absolute best to appeal to conservatives. You have to hold him accountable if you want to see any real change. THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE FIGHT. THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.
it’s not over yet.
Note to everyone immediately talking about how bad Biden is:
I cannot stress enough how much you need to give us just a few goddamn days to be happy and feel safer after 4 years of a Nazi president. Leave that shit in the drafts please.
Update: keep your essays about me in the drafts too. I made this post because I was annoyed and exhausted by all the “I hate trump but Biden sucks too” posts I was seeing. We have accomplished something great! Against all odds we voted out a guy who spent months sabotaging our votes, threatening us, and trying to make us give up hope. We elected the first woman VP. And yes getting to take a break and celebrate is privileged but if you have the ability to you should because IT IS GOOD FOR YOU AND WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING GREAT. Trump and his policies are literally a threat to almost every person I care about, but I’m taking this week to be happier and yes feel safer for the first time in a long time.
Biden has won. Celebrate today but get back to work as soon as we can.
This win does not mean everything that has happened in the United States this year or over the years should be forgotten.
Black Lives Still Matter. Police Brutality is very much still present in the american system. White Supremacists unfortunately still exist. Sexism unfortunately still has a place in society. Women are still not considered as equal.
LGBTQIA people matter. BIPOC matter. Racism is not okay. Being ISLAMOPHOBIC is not okay. Climate Change is real. Science is real.
There is a lot of work that needs to be done. We rejoice today and tomorrow we got back to educating ourselves, educating our community, learning about our privileges and doing our best everyday to make our environment a better place and hence make the world a better place.
Also WEAR A MASK.

We had ANOTHER wellness lecture today. This one was about sleep hygiene and ensuring you get the 8 hours of sleep you need every night to be at your best by like, making sure you have a good eye mask and white noise and use the right essential oils and lower your basal body temperature or whatever.
And I’m just sitting there like, I know how to sleep. I’ve been doing it my whole life, and I think I’m pretty good at it. My lack of sleep has nothing to do with what kind of fan I use or aromatherapy I spray. It’s got everything to do with the fact that working for 80 hours a week, literally two full time jobs, does not leave enough time in the day to do all of my other wellness things (like exercise and eat healthy and see my family and bathe and do house chores or grocery shop). There are literally not enough hours in the day for me to sleep for 8 of them.
You insist I get 8 hours? I have to wake up at 4:30am, so you want me in bed by 8:30pm? My shift doesn’t end until 6pm, with sign out and wrapping up loose ends, I’m lucky if I’m leaving the hospital at 7pm. I drive 20 minutes home. Until I greet my dogs and husband, unpack my bag, and change clothes, it’s 7:30pm.
So in that hour of free time I have left, should I exercise? Apparently not cuz it’s bad for sleep hygiene. You have to do that in the morning. So I’ll wake up at 3:30am instead, right? Well, now I need to be asleep asap.
So maybe I should eat dinner with my husband during that time. But no. It’s not good to eat right before bed. So not that either, huh? But don’t forget to spend time with your spouse. That’s important for wellness.
Oh, I also need to be doing my own medical reading. Because it’s important to stay current. So I guess I’ll just sit with these journals and articles with my husband on the couch for a few minutes and read while I completely ignore him and his day for my own personal knowledge.
But not for too long. Because that sleep ritual is so important. Make sure you get a cold shower to lower your basal body temperature. And put on the same pajamas every night. And turn on your oil diffuser. And leave your phone and pager in the hallway because they’re not good to have in your room. But also make sure you answer any pages or work related phone calls so never mind bring that with you, actually. Close your black out curtains. Insert your ear plugs. Turn off your fan, because that’s pink noise. Turn on your white noise maker because that’s better. But wait, turn the fan back on because you won’t sleep if your room isn’t cold enough. And shame on you if you drank any caffeine in the last 8 hours. You’ve ruined everything now. Don’t you care about how important sleep is? Aren’t you prioritizing wellness?
Do lectures like this make hospital administrators feel better about themselves? Like “it’s not OUR fault if they’re not sleeping. We told them how to sleep better! They should have listened and invested in that lavender oil we talked about!”
If you put the onus on us, you remove any responsibility from the hospital, the programs, the ACGME, the government, etc. You successfully make us feel like it’s our fault if we can’t do everything we should be doing just right. You take a group of people who are overachievers and perfectionists by nature and you give us goals that we literally can’t meet, and tell us if we’re not meeting them we must not care about ourselves. And if we don’t care about ourselves, how can we care about our patients? You let yourself get tired? What if you make a medical error because you’re sleep deprived? Don’t you care about the lives you’re trying to save? What kind of doctor even are you? Prioritize your own well being! Medicine is a team sport, make sure you bring your A Game so you don’t let everyone else down! Do YOUR part!
Like I said, I know how to sleep. I’m SO good at sleep. But I can’t do it if you’re not willing to do your part by ensuring that doctors have the time they need to actually do those things. No amount of cold showers and white noise and essential oils is going to give me more time in my day. So unless you would like me to sleep during my drive home, I’m gonna need a little more from you. Medicine is a team sport, right? Do your part. Don’t put this all on me.
Why I hate wellness lectures.
“Do your part” exactly encapsulates my frustration with current medical education and the current environment of most medicine. Our environments and superiors are blaming us for not being well when the environments we work in are not well. It’s ridiculous.
THIS IS A CALL OUT POST FOR BUBBLE BUDDY
BUBBLE BUDDY: - POISONED OUR WATER SUPPLY - BURNED OUR CROPS - DELIVERED A PLAGUE ONTO OUR HOUSES
HE DID!?!?
NO… BUT ARE WE GONNA WAIT AROUND UNTIL HE DOES!?
I know this is a parody but I feel as if this is just a super meta post on how callout culture works on this site

An Octopus unscrewing a lid from the inside.
Octopuses are going to kill us all someday
I had a biology teacher that told us this story about an octopus at an aquarium in Australia. The staff were concerned because their population of crustaceans kept disappearing. No bodies or anything. So they checked the video feed to find out what’s up.
Across from the the crustacean tank was a small octopus tank. This little fucker squeezed out of a tiny hole at the top of his tank, walk across the hall, and get into the crustacean tank. He would then hunt and eat. After he was done, he crawled back out and get back in his tank
Here’s the kicker: security guards patrolled the area. The staff realized that the octopus had memorized the security’s routine. It would escape and be back between the guards’ round.
My friend who worked at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska had a similar story. Rare fish were disappearing, they suspected theft, and so set up a camera. An octopus was unlocking the top of its tank, walking across the suspended walkway, unlocking the other tank, eating his fill, re-locking the other tank, then re-locking its own tank.
I can’t remember what zoo this happened at, but there was another octopus somewhere who was unscrewing a water valve in the room where its tank was located and routinely flooding the place. The staffers had no idea what it was until they filmed the octopus caught in the act.
RELEASE THE KRAKEN!! But, sir, it has already released itself!

My dad worked in a lab and one of the rooms had a tank with an octopus in it. If they didn’t go play with the octopus he got bored and would climb out of his tank and steal the paperwork off the desks, and drag stuff into his tank to let the scientists know he was upset with them.

How dare you talk to your loved ones rather than random people on public transportation.
You know even if I didn’t have my phone there’s no way in hell I’m gonna talk to a random stranger on the bus.
some things i’ve learned about adulthood that no one warns you about
you will in fact continue to have acne past the age of twenty
you will eventually hit a point where you start to feel icky inside if you go too long without eating some sort of vegetables
depending on your current level of athleticism/physical activity as well as the kind of activities you did as a kid/teenager, your joints may start acting whack in your twenties, despite what everyone says about that not happening until middle age
eventually you will reach a point where you wonder how you were able to stay up until 3am nearly every night and be perfectly fine the next day (and this moment will come much younger than you expect)
it is much harder to meet new people after you’re done with school than sitcoms would have you believe
don’t let society tell you shit: it is perfectly acceptable to live with your parents after you graduate, there’s no need to be broke and miserable just so you can have some misguided attempt at independence straight out of school
