Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899)

Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) was a lesbian French painter known for her naturalist landscapes and animal portraits. Like many other women of this period, she was taught by her father Raymond Bonheur, a painter himself, as most Fine Arts accademies were only accessible to men.

By the time she was a teen, she was already exhibit her paintings at various salons, at 26 she won her first Golden Medal (the same prize won also by Ingres and Delacroix). In 1865, she became the first woman to receive the Gran Cross of the Lègion d’Honneur.

She successfully obtained a special permit to wear pants in public, arguing that she would needed them because otherwise she would have gotten her skirt dirty working, as she often painted outdoors.
