Fanart #4 complete!
Zuko is an exemplary father. He knows his children love the sea, and while Mom Katara is still sleeping or resting, he takes their little onesβwho have the habit of waking up early just like himβto the beach. Because when they are on vacation, Katara needs to rest; he believes she has every right to, so he takes care of everything.
If the kids want to go for a swim at 7:00 AM, he takes them to the beach and then heads back after about an hour to prepare breakfast for Katara.
Zuko is literally the man of the house, in the best possible way.
I still have to improve my backgrounds π₯Ήπ₯Ή
The trailer is finally out and it reminded me of how much I loveeeee these outfits
blossom's zutara fanfic recommendation:

great, like great exploration of zuko's trauma post-canon and his feelings about the fire nation. it explores themes with ozai. honestly there isn't much I can say the fic is so captivating. and it also has smut. everything you'll see here has smut I won't hide.
Someone is never beating the self insert allegations...
I do not want to hear about Bryan talking about how hot he thinks Aang is.
Also, if Aang is not yet the Avatar he needs to be, and he's dead in LoK, when does he actually become the Avatar? This movie was supposed to be his moment?
his comments remind me of when sometimes squidward, in this selfish and idealistic way of his, draws or sculpts himself by redoing parts of his body that he wants to enhance and fawns over the ideal vision of himself that doesn't exist in his world.
that is an awfully long and detailed description of a character's looks just to say "yeah he's 25 but not mature yet"...

Watched the new atla movie- it is so much worse than I thought you guys lmao
There is no thought put behind any of the conflicts. Half of it is man v nature in situations with Aang, a guy who can literally move rocks and air, and is getting bested by falling rocks through the air.
It feels like half the time random stuff happens just to fill the runtime rather than progress the character arcs (or arc, cause it's just Aang). There's also no strategy or skill involved in winning the day or overcoming any of the conflicts other than random lion turtle-esque magic fixes. They just fight for a while, no cause and effect, no reason for why anyone is winning or losing, and then Aang wins inexplicably. It's all spectacle and no substance.
There are some neat bending animation scenes, but the main characters will randomly be defeated for no reason other than they needed to be defeated to move the plot forward. They just are less powerful randomly because they have to be beat. There are so many plot contrivances, but the plot isn't interesting enough to excuse them or make them worth suffering through even slightly. Because, again, the plot is mostly just random stuff.
All of the characters have dumbed down generic non-personalities and only ever say lines that revolve around Aang and his interests or really unfunny canned jokes you could pick up at the dollar store that have nothing to do with their personalities being funny in certain situations but generic template lines you could swap between any characters. All the characters were butchered. Sokka was treated like an actual clown. The voice acting is really atrocious and flat. The pacing is both too fast and too drawn out.
"My life wasn't as easy as yours/Life wasn't as kind to me as yours" (one of those) said to Katara by a random one-dimensional side villain forced into the story to humanize the other side. Katara, whose mother is dead, whose entire culture was wiped out, who always had the weight of the world on her shoulders and was the only one keeping her group on track. Whose current canon bf assaulted her multiple times before they got together. Aang telling her she doesn't understand being the last of her kind when she's literally the last Southern waterbender (not the same as the North, completely different cultures, and she doesn't even have temples or relics to bring back her culture like he does). Katara is just there to be the supportive gf for Aang whose only motivations in life have to do with Aang and his interests, she initiates all the affection to a gratuitous level. Her one thing she does on her own is interrupted and made about him when he shows up and she's just googly heart eyes for him while he exists and does his own thing.
Katara and Zuko have 0 interactions. I thought they'd at least have more, you know, animated scenes and stuff next to each other from all the screenshots I've seen in the community and tags here. But no, they are literally in the frame "together" for .1 second in each of these instances. Idk how people are getting these screenshots lmao.
I say this with love, do not watch this movie unless you're entirely satisfied only watching for pretty animation (and don't care about the butchery of the character designs like Zuko's scar and Katara's facial features and curly hair retconned). These are not the characters you love; they are bloodless machines existing to serve the plot and make Aang the most important special boy. It was painful to watch. The Zutara fans have already saturated posts with every second of screentime Zuko and Katara have together and it is way less than you think. These are literally 1 second blink and you miss it scenes lol, they are that uninvolved. Enjoy the fact that they have been captured for you without having to watch this.
The new Avatar movie: A talentless sequel to a once brilliant show.
Finally gathered my thoughts on the new Avatar movie, and my only question is: why did this "legend of a fancy, empty fanservice shell" even exist?
The movie was doomed at the execution stage of its concept and script.
The creators had a bulletproof foundation: one of the most masterfully written shows in television history (Avatar: The Last Airbender), the canon comics, and The Legend of Korra, which already showed us the characters aged, with children and grandchildren.
And that is exactly why the idea of focusing on "Aangβs struggles and rebuilding the Air Nation" feels entirely redundant.
1. The Redundant Arc and Zero Stakes
We have already witnessed Aangβs grief, guilt, and pain over his peopleβs genocide throughout the original three seasons. That arc was closed and beautifully processed. The comics already showed the Air Acolytes, and TLOK put a definitive period on this storyline by bringing back actual airbenders.
Because we already know the future, the audience has absolutely nothing to worry about:
* We know Tenzin and his kids will remain the only airbenders for decades.
* We know exactly how long the main characters live.
* We know the fate of their families.
There are no stakes. Will they die? No. Will the future change? No. The answer is already known, making the entire narrative arc completely empty. We didnβt need a movie-length repetition of Aangβs trauma just for the sake of it.
Merely drawing pretty, adult versions of the characters is not enough to make a good movie. A film needs a core conflict, meaning, and a fresh idea.
2. Fanservice Wrapping, Empty Inside
If we look at this film as a standalone (even though almost the entire audience consists of old fans), it is hollow. The characters aren't explored; their screen time adds nothing substantial to their personalities.
So, why does this movie even exist?
* To force-feed us the Kataang canon?
* To show off Aangβs bizarre, unrealistic new design with a mountain of muscles that makes zero sense for a vegan monk with his lifestyle?
* To make him look like a self-insert of the creators who desperately need to force the audience into loving him?
The creators seem so attached to Aang as their self-insert that they still cannot accept that he never became the most beloved character in his own show.
So adult Aang is redesigned to be as conventionally attractive as possible. Broad shoulders. Huge muscles. Constant shirtless shots. A heavy emphasis on his romance with Katara.
The message feels almost painfully obvious:
βLook at him. This is the hero youβre supposed to love. This is the man youβre supposed to admire. This is the man Katara is supposed to be obsessed with.β
Seriously, it felt like watching a high-budget fan-animation for a mediocre Kataang fanfiction. It is so primitive and cheap how Katara throws herself at Aangβs neck in almost every scene, completely stripped of her independence. Worse entirely, Aang risks her life for the sake of his own elusive, idealistic hopes, making him the absolute worst partner imaginable. Then again, knowing what a terrible, neglectful father he turns out to be in TLOK, his toxic selfishness here isn't even surprising. What is surprising and deeply frustrating is how the creators force Katara to blindly love THIS and submissively accept whatever crumbs of attention or respect he throws her way. Once again, Katara is reduced to being a mere appendage to the Avatarβa disservice they already started in TLOK.
3. The Nerfing of the Gaang
The rest of the characters fared no better.
Everyone feels like an extended cameo rather than actual living characters.
* Sokka:The brave warrior who wasn't a bender yet stood tall against firebenders amplified by Sozinβs Comet is gone. Instead, we got a cowardly, quirky inventor making stupid jokes. Heβs a parody of his former self.
* Toph: Completely useless to the plot. She is just there.
* Zuko: Just a pretty cardboard cutout who lost all of his signature charisma. He isn't even necessary to the plot. Not to mention the sheer stupidity of the writing: the literal Fire Lord, ruler of an entire global empire, is casually piloting a zeppelin completely aloneβno crew, no royal guard, as if he has absolutely nothing to manage in his own country. And watching the Fire Lord personally repair a ship... God, it looked so incredibly braindead.
The creators literally removed his chest scar and gave him zero meaningful interaction with Katara.
The authors' eternal fear of the Zutara fandom is honestly getting hilarious at this point.
It is especially glaring how they tried to deflect attention: "Quick, let's throw in some hints for Zukka, and let's have a half-naked Zuko catch Toph!" Itβs a desperate attempt to distract Zutara fans, as if stuffing the movie with "cute" Kataang scenes wasn't enough to stop people from even thinking about Zutara. They feel so deeply uncomfortable with Zutara's mere existence that they have to forcefully shove Kataang down our throats while aggressively trying to erase any trace of Zutara.
4. What We ACTUALLY Needed to See
Instead of retreading old ground, the movie could have explored the massive blank spaces in the lore that actually lead into the future we know:
* The Birth of Republic City: Show the first rise of social inequality. Show how Aang failed to solve this issue, leaving it as a heavy mistake of the past Avatar for Korra to fix.
* The Bloodbending Ban: Give us a real story about why Katara had to ban it. Show us why it couldn't even be adapted for medical use. The canon ban still feels unconvincingβsub-bending is potentially useful, and even lethal lightning-bending wasn't banned but redirected for the public good.
* Characters with Unknown Fates: Give us someone to actually worry about! Where is Azula (did she redeem herself or is she still a threat)? What about Ty Lee and chi-blocking leading into the Equalists? What about Mai?
* Suki's Tragedy: Address the theory that Suki died young. It would perfectly and tragically explain why Sokka ended up alone and never started a familyβlosing two girls he loved could be his personal curse, making him close his heart to risk.
* Kanto: We could have been introduced to the mysterious Kanto as Tophβs future love interestβsomeone serious, with a personality resembling Lin, so the audience could see something familiar in him.
* King Bumi: Even showing old King Bumi sacrificing his own life to protect the heroes would have been better, so that the name of Aangβs firstborn finally received a powerful emotional justification.
But no. Instead, we wasted time on things that had already been said.
The Bitter Truth About the Creators
It is glaringly obvious that the people who made ATLA deeply emotional and complex were missing here. It was Aaron Ehasz and the brilliant room of writers who gave the original show its soul, layers, and emotional maturity.
On the backbone of that collective work, Bryke built a sequel franchise that proves once again: on their own, they simply do not know how to create something truly great.
Itβs a shame so much money and years of work were wasted on this hollow fanservice. People will not be analyzing the depth of this movie years from now like they still do with the original ATLA. Because there is simply nothing to analyze.
well well well... (x)
'katara and aang are about two genocide survivors finding commonality in that and making a family together!' wow great! i love reading that letter where katara got to pass down some SWT heritage to tenzin -
okay...maybe not. maybe the grandkids have some SWT culture incorporated into their designs -
and no, the blue-grey eyes don't count because if i have to use a color picker to see what color their eyes are to determine who their grandmother is, you may have fucked up
or how about when aang really understands katara -
*cue the last half of season 3 where aang either talks down to katara or the writers didn't think to put anything in to help the relationship*
*cue the movie having a scene where aang yells at katara that she doesn't understand why he's so desparate to get the staff*
yikes
guys. i don't know how to tell you this, but i don't think two white men still licking their wounds from when their first crush didn't work out a decade before they made their show was putting katara and aang together for progressive reasons. i'm glad you found a way to weave in a progressive reason, but stop giving bryke the credit where there isn't any
kataraβs favorite pillow <3
old sketch incoming!
Katara: It's nice to see you again! Did you enjoy the show?
Looks like Admirable "Lee" is thinking of a career change hehe. He's shocked she remembers him.
This is from this circus au where Ty Lee is a ringmaster, Katara is a mermaid and shocks the crowd with her swimming act. Another runaway joins the ranks (Zuko).

I don't remember where I read that if Zuko knew about the necklace tradition, heβd probably forge one for Katara using a crystal from the Crystal Cave. But I loved that idea so much that I made the necklace the color of one of those crystals π₯Ή

(love's) the death of peace of mind by @jasmine-tea-latte. read here.
this fic must have the record of longest, most prolonged smut scene in world history. but there's more than smut this one also has plot! and it's great! painted lady x blue spirit joining forces to take down the bad guys before natla plagiarized (because what's natla without zutaras). must say that I had never envisioned painted spirit working together for that one thing but I loved it and now I wish natla also kinda plagiarized. it was a really good idea. this one is also another canon au so it goes all the way to the ending. also zuko's feelings are so raw in this fic.

craziest crack smut I've ever read I was laughing so hard. so basically katara goes through an alpha phase and wants to fuck and sokka invites zuko ot the water tribe so that they can finally confess to each other but naked. there's also some dubious-but-based-on-canon aang at the end but you can ignore.
