So I went and watched the Odyssey movie with some friends, and I had a really hard time being immersed in the film.
First things first, I'm used to seeing famous actors in lots of films and stuff. I can handle it, it just depends on their acting. Matt Damon in Ocean's 11 and 12 is... Chef's kiss. Then him in Bourne series he is also good. Anything else I kinda have a hard time watching him because he is just playing himself. Watching him as Odysseus... I didn't believe him. It was Matt Damon playing Odysseus not Odysseus on screen.
It was basically that way with all the male leads except Tom. He did really good, but I still struggled a bit with him. Anne Hathaway did a pretty good job, and I bought her as Penelope. There was only once the mask slipped for me but it went back easily. Zendaya, Lupita, and Samantha all did really well.
Charlize Theron ... I just couldn't. It was not Calypso to me and it was so hard.
I think more than anything it's not the actors. But everyone felt... Emotionless.
I didn't want to listen to the EPIC musical but I did some time ago before watching this film and I gotta tell ya, I've CRIED listening to those songs. The music, the voices, everything has so much power and emotion. This movie lacked emotions. It felt empty.
But that's just my take on it. I'm sure others enjoyed it and that's great. It just fell short for me.
Nothing hits like Gladiator I guess.
