I don’t know where that « Butch is the rebel » thing came from— maybe it came from people constantly seeing the Rrb as « boy versions » of the Ppg, and NOT as the individual characters they are. (I agree that the boys are definitely complementary to the girls’ personalities, and that they DO have their fair bits of similarities, but my point stands.)

Anyways, my boy is NOT the rebel some people make him out to be— like, did we forget that in the show, not ONCE did Butch try to challenge Brick’s authority? You know who DOES challenge their leader?

BUTTERCUP. And Boomer, in a way? But yeah.

Is he a troublemaker? Indubitably. Just like his brothers are. They’re the ROWDYruff boys. They find it fun to wreck havoc and destroy stuff and challenge authority, but their pursuit of « evil » is moreso abstract. It’s that « cool », distant thing they were subconsciously taught to seek by their parental figures, Mojo, and HIM. And I like to think that that is why they’re so hellbent on destroying the PPG.

Because the Ppg ARE goodness. They are, and I shall quote Mojo himself, « Butts nestled between the pillars of peace and love. ». To the boys, destroying THEM would cement THEIR own roles as the worst, most evil supervillains (and, by extension, worthy of their creators’ attention and respect. Because I do not believe HIM could ever love ANYTHING, and Mojo cannot love ANYTHING more than revenge at this point.)

I suppose their egos would also be a factor in their pursuit of the girls’ downfall— but anyway!

The core difference between Butch and Buttercup (who are my favorite of their respective factions, erm erm), I think, is as follow:

We may not see much of them, and we can only see their 5 years old selves, but just LOOK AT THEM:

THESE ARE BIRDS OF A FEATHER. These three are ALWAYS together, and they always seem to be having a LOT of fun— even if that fun comes from evilness, of course.

But come on. Even at five, who would want to stick by people they HATE, or even dislike?

Like, I think the boys actually LOVE each other, just as much the Powerpuff Girls love each other, just… in a very different way. Because their « parents » are who they are, and they have no real guidance or moral support/compass.

They kind of just do whatever they want to do whenever they want to do it, like, they don’t care about right/wrong, only about fun/not fun. Or at least, that’s the case when they’re still kids. Obviously they’ll grow and evolve.

I don’t know if y’all deem the Multiverse’s voice clips of them as canon but in those they seem to actually care about each in those.

Just to quote Butch, “I can’t believe Boomer is my brother, but I still like him.”
