"What the fuck…" she says, and you sit up on the floor, watching the blackened sheets of skin slide off your arms, revealing fresh, bloody skin underneath, glistening with a thick, viscous fluid. The ruined, discarded sheds of skin start to shrivel up right before your eyes, coiling tight atop the carpet until it dissolves into nothing but ash. "What the fuck are you?" Clear whispers. You look up at her, licking your lips. "I'm a vampire," you say, and then you laugh. There's no way to say it without sounding ridiculous.

In Blood Choke, you play as a reawakened vampire, with no memory of who you are or what you did to result in your entombment. Fumble your way through your first few days after waking up in a strange, overwhelming future-- meet new friends and reunite with an old flame.

Navigate this new world and try to piece your past back together before it can catch up to you-- and decide your future, before it's too late.

Features:

Play as a genderlocked lesbian main character. This game focuses heavily on the main character's gender, presentation, and sexuality.

Pursue one (or all..?) of three romance options: Clear Rivers, Hana Lee, and your former lover, Valentina.

Choices that will alter your relationships with the cast as well as the narrative moving forward. How do you want to approach the woman you barely remember? What future do you want for this new city you've found yourself in? How will you choose to handle the hunger?

"I think you're right. For whatever it's worth," Sasha says then.

You glance over at him, prickling slightly. "It's worth nothing," you scoff. "Maybe a hundred years ago. But it's too late, now."

Sasha shifts from foot to foot, avoiding your gaze.

"Yeah. I guess so," he sighs. The two of you stand apart, Sasha staring down at his boots as he finishes his cigarette. "But I just want you to know, $name. Whatever happens next… I am on your side."

"What are you, five?" you retort, flicking your own cigarette butt into the gutter. "There are no 'sides.' And even if there were-- we can //never// be on the same side. Atlas has made that very clear, Sasha."

"But I'm not Atlas," Sasha blurts. "I'm not Atlas, and I'm not Julien." He takes a deep breath then. "I just… want to make this right."

"//Sure//. It only took me coming back from the dead to scare you into it."

"Yes," Sasha agrees, catching you off-guard. "I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I've never done anything bad. That I haven't hurt you, or Valentina. I was– comfortable. I was safe. That's all I wanted, was to be safe. You coming back– I'm not safe. It made me realize I was never safe. And I've been turning away from it all for a long time. It's easy to do." He pauses, shaking his head before running a hand through his hair. "It's so easy to do, isn't it?" he repeats.

You narrow your eyes at him, your jaw clenching. "I wouldn't know."

Sasha deflates a little, clasping his hands together. "If I tried to stand up to Atlas, you and I //both// would have ended up in a goddamn sarcophagus, and Valentina would have been left all alone."

"//You and I//? But it wasn't //you and I//. I was the one that ended up in the fucking sarcophagus, Sasha. It was Valentina that was forced to marry that bastard Standard. What the fuck did you do?" You step closer, jabbing your finger at his chest. "But what is it Atlas said? We deserved it, right?" Sasha opens his mouth, but you keep going. "No. There is only one person here who ever got what he deserved, and it was Julien. And if you don’t want to end up like him, then get the fuck away from me, Sasha!"

Anyways the way you write your scenes feels very immersive, Intimate and understanding in ways i can’t describe. Each character has so much depth, strengths and flaws in your story so far. From brutal violence to lustrous ecstasy I was sat.

and you can definitely be a tomboy, or butch, or a stud. it was important to me to include trans women in this story especially when so many butch/lesbian spaces tend to only equate transness with transmasculinity. trans women (butch or otherwise) and their experiences enrich these spaces and our community & it's important to me to reflect that in my work.

i know the book Dead Collections by Isaac R. Fellman does this, but i haven't read it myself... otherwise i would say vampirism as addiction might be the most prevalent depiction. the movie Habit (1995) comes to mind, about a man struggling with alcoholism that becomes entangled with a vampire woman who takes advantage of his vulnerability and isolates him from his friends.

i've also just recently read Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist, with a child vampire who is dependent on an adult to bring her blood (it seems like the recent TV series adaptation reinterpreted this through an addiction lens, too). i think child vampires could be a pretty on the nose metaphor for this, especially ones that still age mentally but appear as children, like Claudia from Interview with the Vampire. forcibly infantilized due to her illness/appearance, and dependent on others because of it.

of course there is always the risk of implication with these things (just like when people do fantasy racism but then justify the racism, like dragon age does with their mages and elves) justifying ableism by implying vampires will kill and drain able-bodied people to survive... i like the comment that kinda flips this and puts the able-bodied/human person as the one in control, locking the vampire away and romanticizing that toxic dynamic of "caretaker." Let the Right One In does something similar (it's a book full of horrible people) but Hakan only helps Eli because he expects to be given something in return. and, again, Habit captures that toxic codependent dynamic between two people with addiction and with the addiction itself.

in general i'd say there's not much of a slowburn in this game, but you're also not locked out of anything yet. you don't have to choose every heart option when they appear, though how many you do does change certain scenes and give you different flavor text. this game IS a romance game, all of the ROs are kinda interested in the MC, and eventually you will have to choose an RO (or multiple if you want to do the poly) and again depending how many times you've flirted with the character/s previously will result in some differences in the relationship at the start, but i don't really want to call any of it slowburn because overall the romances move very fast even if you haven't flirted that much.

Valentina: an elder vampire, she is your sire and your former lover. you only remember fleeting moments of your time together before the sarcophagus, and you are still trying to figure out what exactly happened between the two of you and the council. she's aggressive and possessive, and isn't particularly nice, but it's clear you have a lot of history together and that she has waited a very long time for your return.

Clear Rivers: a human that accidentally got caught up in all of this mess. the first to find you after you stumbled out of your tomb, she invites you into her apartment to patch you up and inadvertently becomes trapped in a web of vampire politics. now technically under your protection, she's stuck with you for the time being, reluctantly giving up her job as an EMT to keep her disappearance under the radar. she's interested in the vampire world but also intent on keeping her independence, and how you treat her will change her attitude towards you and the others significantly.
