She sat on a bench in the campus courtyard, a box by her side. The air was cold, but she was used to ignoring the numbness of her fingers and chill that nipped at her nose. She’d been staring at the streetlamp for a while now, distracted by the way the light faded into the air surrounding it.
Finally she brought her eyes away from the light’s glow, down to the phone in her ungloved hand.
To: Lucas, Barry
Hi guys it’s my birthday! It’s ok if you didn’t remember, but I brought cake so let’s hang out at my dorm tonight!
Love, Dawn. x
She stared at her own words for what felt like hours, a shaking finger hovering over the send button. She stared until her sight blurred the screen to a rectangle of light. She could feel her eyes starting to water.
She sighed, her breath misting the air in front of her. Locking her phone, she stared at the screensaver that popped up. It was an old picture of her and her friends on a Christmas day that now seemed like a lifetime ago. Her lips twitched into a small smile, but her eyes weren’t smiling as tears began to drop onto the screen.
Dawn’s friends, the two people she loved more than life itself, hadn’t remembered her birthday.
The blonde boy had been sound asleep up until just recently. He had stayed up all night priorly, and was stuck with a five hour shift come morning, leaving him exhausted as all heck. The only reasoning of his wake up, as of now, was the loud buzz of his phones ringer going off.Â
Rolling around on his futon, he reached sleepily towards his phone, scavenging the pile of video games near him until finally finding the item of interest. Afterwards, he sat up a bit, opening to read the text, his drowsy eyes going wide as he read it.
"...!"
Quickly, he reached for the call button, and soon fell back onto his soft pillow. Waiting for the phone to answer, as it rang.
