What is number sense?

Within my final placement in College where I was placed at a child care centre with preschool students I had one child in particular who needed to practice his pincer grasp (fine motor skills) as recommended from his occupational therapist. I created a large pizza that had slices and on those slices were pepperoni pieces (dots) which indicated numbers. I used wooden clothes pins and wrote the numeral on the tip of the clothes pin also with a visual representation through dots for each numeral.

Here is a wonderful website with math games for kids! This one in particular is called “Can you spy the hidden numbers?”

ABCYa is a great website where students and children, whether in the classroom or at home, can go on their tablets or computers and play educational games that range from language to math. There are games available to many different grades such as Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5. This website is the leader in educational games for kids and is available for free parents, teachers and children. 

In Baroody, Eiland, Purpura & Reid’s (2012) study where they use two computer programs to experiment kindergartners’ fluency with easiest sums found that Verschaffel, Greer, & De Corte (2007) stated, “The conventional wisdom regarding the role of reasoning strategies has shifted dramatically over the last century” (p. 436). 

Here is a great book that can be read to kindergarten students about the number 0! The book called Zero written by Kathryn Otoshi is a great book to introduce the number 0 to students and how the number 0 can be used in different ways from numbers 1-10. 

Here is a wonderful activity where students can practice one-to-one correspondence!

One-to-one correspondence, “means children are able to count a group of objects, while touching each object, one at a time” (Fuoco, 2015, Counting Cups). 

What you need for the activity: 11 Paper Cups Markers 55 small objects (like cotton balls, pennies, etc)
