Colouring in
Itâs March 31st, which is my webcomicâs 7th birthday. This comic and entire cast of characters are the love of my life, and the work Iâve poured into it is the work I would consider defining for my identity as an artist and as a person. This is what I love to do: character-centered stories with rich and experimental visuals, full of wonder at the cultural/artistic heritage of humanity.
The World in Deeper Inspection is a multi-episodic comic about a Jersey Devil detective, his career, and his friends in Victorian England. The comic is primarily about Detective Alcott Grimsley as he brings peace into the souls of the recently dead, whether itâs finding a missing head, retrieving old heirlooms or finding out the murderer. He occasionally helps out the other denizens of the Night, which is the âunseenâ and interesting aspect concurrent with our world, so he meets cryptids, faeries, immortals, etc. Itâs pretty fun for the most part, but there are hints of a larger story which I hope to tie together one day. This is where character-centered element comes in: there are backstories and friendship-building stories of Grimsley and his squad - a Norse giant, a vampire, a banshee and a wandering bookseller.
I just recently started on the first backstory - about the vampire, Zeynel. Itâs part of the TWiDI canon, but functions as a stand-alone. So you can read it without having read about the rest of TWiDI.
The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya is a 17th century Ottoman story about love (religious and romantic), compassion, hope and loss. Which happens to have vampires (conceptualised as ghuls) in it. This comic has positive non-Western Muslim representation across the two chapters (except for the villain, who isâŚancient religion), a hero valued for his gentleness and love for others, and a heroine who is strong for her ambition and her devotion. TCM is basically Zeynelâs backstory - how he came to be the PERSON he is, before he died and returned as a ghul, and the aftermath of it, devoid of edginess and violence. Itâs my best work overall, at this point.
Anyway this is the long post about my baby. Happy birthday TWiDI!! And now yâall know I am a comic artist.

Progress is slow but not painfully slow... just been busy with work and life in general. I need to make more time for my artistic endeavors before they fall by the wayside!

Yay! Itâs totally me if I was a super flat cartoon character :B
Working on a vectorized self portrait of myself. Definitely having trouble getting back in the swing of things, but itâs lots of fun none the less.
Iâm back in the illustrator saddle again!
My dark obsession with carpenter Brut just keeps growing and just in time for Halloween! @sephei check this one out. I think youâll like this guyâs style, and the visuals are killer!
Screencaps I took while drawing the semirealistic gen 7 starters.

To Be or Not To Be⌠ Yourself?
By Karen Kirkland- Creative Strategist
There is NO question!
Youâre sitting in a coffee shop waiting for âMr or Mrs Rightâ to show up. You check the time- any minute now. A bead of sweat runs down your brow⌠Your palms are sweaty and you just remembered you forgot to put on deodorant! You gulp down a glass of water in an attempt to quench your dry-mouth.  In walks the man/woman of your dreams. Your heart skips a couple of beats and you find yourself wanting to say and do all the right things⌠Even if that means you have to become someone else.
Youâre now six months in and things just arenât working out and youâre wondering why. Chances are itâs because youâve been pretending to be someone other than who you really are. Trying to sustain this ruse over any substantial period of time can be exhausting. Eventually youâre going to be âfound outâ.
Remember that the next time you find yourself on an interview- sitting across from a potential employer. For starters, take a deep breath⌠Thatâs itâŚin through your nose and out through your mouth. Once more. Ok- now youâre ready! The best thing you can do for yourself and for them is to, well- just be yourself.
But wait- who are you?
You are your own person, with your own thoughts and opinions. Donât just agree with everything your potential employer is saying because you want to appear affable. If you have a differing opinion or a different experience, donât be afraid to respectively express it. Believe it or not- your employer may be excited by the prospect of you bringing an alternate point of view to the conversation.
Youâre witty, confident and insightful. You should absolutely be knowledgeable about your craft and you should be able to have a conversation about the process and know what you like and why you like it. But, if thereâs a playful side to your personality donât be afraid to express that as well. Donât be overly self-assured or egotistical, but be confident in what you can bring to the company- and donât be afraid to have some fun!
You have a history and you should be able to concisely and effectively communicate that backstory, making sure to hit all the pivotal moments in the journey that has shaped your career (up to this point). Your dialogue shouldnât sound rehearsed, but it should certainly be rehearsed. Youâre going to be nervous, so the better you know your âstoryâ the more you can stay connected to your breathing and the more you can remain centered and present in the room. But take the shortest route possible and donât meander when telling the story. Most importantly, donât make stuff up⌠If youâre not an avid gamer, donât pretend to be one just in an effort to impress.
Youâre chatty by nature, and thatâs okay, but just like on a date- donât do ALL the talking. Or letâs say youâre the shy type⌠thatâs okay too, but the conversation should be balanced. Ask questions- get to know the person on the other side of the table. Allow your potential employer an opportunity to talk and to give you a little more insight into what their expectations are, and be prepared to listen. If you listen attentively enough, you can then formulate additional questions. Then the conversation will flow and you can avoid those awkward moments of silence when neither party knows what to say. Or worse yet⌠that glazed over look someone gets when youâve absolutely talked too much!
Remember- youâre in a relationshipâŚitâs a two-way street. After a few interviews, you should absolutely know if you are a good fit for the company and just as importantly, if the company is good fit for you.
When interviewing, employers want you to do well because that means their search is over. But itâs not cool for you or your employer when six months into your working relationship you both realize you are someone completely different than who you were pretending to be during the interview process.
So go forth with the confidence of knowing youâre encouraged to be exactly who you are.
