This is going to wrap it up for the vegas meals. I was considering extending one night and flying “day of” since it’s only a one hour flight to Costa Mesa and there are many, many throughout the day—but I’m not wired that way. If something goes wrong on Monday and I’m not there for my two-hour speaking part? I’ll never forgive myself. So day-before is just what I’m going to do.
But I had enough vegas this trip. Initially I was flying at 9pm so I could have one more dinner in vegas. I didn’t go to a proper steakhouse this trip. It was always planned, but Cut wouldn’t tske a reservation for 1 this weekend and… I got such a good steak at Lago yesterday.
Plus, if you’re forced to check out at noon and you’re staying through the evening, you’re living like a nomad the whole day… it’s just weird not being able to go to your room between meals. So it was time to just rebook on an earlier flight and enjoy lunch hard, and then maybe do a little shopping and head to the airport.
I had a nice trip. I’m glad I didn’t go to Houston and fly again on Sunday. This was an expensive but needed self-care weekend.
Best I can do with a phone.
I like vegas, I just think I like it differently than most people do. I ate and drank well today. I’m in bed, teeth brushed, with my Asus XBox ROG Ally X (literally the longest product name of all time) in my hands.
Goodnight.
Dinner #2 in the books. I ate at Joe’s.
All these “date meals” for one are a little weird. It’s not the same as my business travel solo dinners which can sometimes also be a little frou frou.
Enjoying the Yolo weekend so far.

Uber dropped me at the wrong location for my dinner reservation, causing me to arrive a bit warm from the brisk walk, and five minutes late.
“May I apologize for my, late arrival,” I said to the seasoned gentleman handling guest arrivals.
“I appreciate that you apologized,” he said to me catching me a bit off guard before he added, “most would not.”
“My uber dropped me at the wrong location,” I informed him as he perused the guest list for my name.
“You’ve been here before then,” he said to me. There’s a side valet drop right next to the restaurant. “It is the Las Vegas Blvd Valet drop off, but your driver should have known since you asked to go to Joe’s.”
We agreed I had been poorly served, but that was sure to change once seated. And if I uber in the future I’ll make sure to select the correct location and not simply name the restaurant.
Today’s lunch was A+ at one of my favorite restaurants in vegas. It’s so favorite that… unless I change my mind last minute, I’m going to eat there for dinner on the way to my flight to Costa Mesa tomorrow.
After lunch I played a little Diablo, then walked around and shopped.
Vegas for one is a lil weird but I really enjoyed my first meal here. Not pictured: the obligatory rosé champagne.

My view for the next few days

My fleeting stupid thoughts, “I’d love to order an apple martini with blue cheese olives.”
If I don’t post a “Randy in an airport” photo, did the flight really happen?
I don’t love working a fairly full workday then donating 8 more hours to travel, getting into the hotel at midnight and needing to hit the ground running the next day, but it’s a way of life. I rarely travel during work hours unless it’s around some kind of same day travel requirement.
Anyway, I’m here in lovely Troy, Michigan for 2.5 days of a workshop, where I’m really only presenting on Day 1. If it turns out my presence is wasted on days 2 and 3 then I cut my trip short next week and go home Tuesday morning. I put the odds of an early departure at 80%. 70-80%.
Another update on the lightning strike. My neighbor was home when it happened and he lost some stuff too. Mother Nature don’t play!
Thought I was done talking about this but you can add:
Xfinity internet service for the four houses around me served by the utility box in my back yard
My clothes dryer
My downstairs air conditioner
… to the list of casualties. At this point I’m pretty sure lightning hit my house, or the power lines close to my house.

Bad news
The plug behind the TV is working. I'm beginning to wonder if we were struck by lightning on that side of the house because literally everything on that side is D-E-A-D!! Like superdead. And other than the downstairs AC which isn't working, everything else in the house seems ok after resetting breakers etc. The M4 mac mini has lights on it now, so it's probably working so we can take that off the list.
Anyway, that's life. Replacement cost of the dead items: $3727. Hopefully some (any?) of it is covered by warranty as they all died within a year of purchase, but I suspect "power surges" are excluded from such replacements. And no, I don't buy service plans on this stuff because they're pure profit for the vendor and have never paid me off one time in 30 years (where I did buy them... like a lot... I hate money).
Compounding my issues is the fact that I'm headed to the airport today and David is at work fulltime so there are only a few days David has off where he could let a technician into the house to fix the A/C and one GFCI outlet that doesn't seem to work.
Womp womp.
And one last update as Randy remembers how home electrical systems work...
All the GFCI outlets I checked were tripped and had to be reset. There's one I still haven't checked, and that's the one outdoors behind the dead TV. I'm not the guy who gets lucky in this regard, but wouldn't it be nice if that outdoor plug and the plug directly behind it in the wall with the dead TV and subwoofer attached were on the same circuit?
I'll check tomorrow.
