the gym doors squeaked as hinata shoved them open, his grin almost splitting his face in half. “guys! GUYS!! big news!!”
the team collectively groaned.
“if it’s about meat buns again—” daichi started.
“it’s NOT,” hinata cut him off dramatically. “this is about my cousin; she moved here from another country.”
hinata puffed up. “she’s the BEST cousin. you’re gonna love her. but she’s MY cousin, so hands OFF.”
before anyone could reply, hinata waved someone in.
and you stepped inside.

it was quiet. too quiet.

“AN ANGEL JUST WALKED INTO THE GYM,” nishinoya shrieked.
“WE’RE NOT WORTHY!!” tanaka wailed, already on his knees.
daichi smacked both of them on the head. “calm down.”
but kageyama— oh, kageyama was silent.
because the second his eyes landed on you, his brain short-circuited.
something inside him went error 404.
he was staring. he knew he was staring. but he couldn’t stop. his ears burned, his hands twitched like he forgot what hands even did, and for a horrifying moment he thought maybe he forgot how to breathe.
hinata beamed, oblivious. “kageyama say hi! this is my cousin!”
“h-hi,” kageyama croaked. his voice cracked so badly it echoed off the gym walls.
you smiled at him. smiled. “hi.”

practice was… chaos.
kageyama, normally sharp and precise, was suddenly fumbling tosses like he’d never seen a volleyball before. he tripped twice. he served into the wall. at one point he yelled “MOM” instead of “MINE.”
everyone noticed.
“bro,” tanaka wheezed, clutching his stomach. “he’s DOWN BAD.”
“he’s not even down bad,” nishinoya gasped. “he’s buried six feet under.”
tsukishima smirked from the sidelines. “wow. who knew a single smile could turn the king of the court into a court jester.”
“shut UP,” kageyama snapped, face redder than a tomato.
meanwhile, you clapped happily from the bench, clearly impressed. “you guys are so good! i can’t believe you practice this hard every day.”
kageyama almost ascended to heaven on the spot.
but hinata? hinata had entered protective cousin mode.
every time kageyama looked at you for longer than a millisecond, hinata zoomed in like a hawk.
“don’t even think about it,” hinata hissed, squinting at his setter.
“i’m not thinking about anything!” kageyama stammered.
“you ARE. i can SEE IT.”
“what are you— i’m NOT—”

the rest of the team sat back like they were watching a live drama.
“this is better than tv,” yamaguchi whispered.
“better than meat buns?” tanaka asked.
“...almost,” yamaguchi admitted.

the first real incident happened during water break.
you had been chatting with yamaguchi when kageyama made his move. clutching a spare water bottle like it was an engagement ring, he shuffled up to you.

your eyes lit up. “oh, that’s so sweet! thank you, kageyama.”
boy, was he whipped.
but before you could even unscrew the cap, hinata dove in like a flying squirrel.

“POLITE IS MY JOB!!” hinata snapped, glaring at kageyama like he just declared war.
kageyama, flat on the floor, groaned.
“this is incredible,” tsukishima deadpanned. “ten bucks says hinata tackles him again tomorrow.”

eventually, the team couldn’t resist meddling.

but the funniest part? you seemed completely unaware. every time they bickered, you just tilted your head like, boys are weird, and went back to cheering them on.
which, honestly, only made kageyama fall harder.

everyone swarmed you like pigeons. everyone except kageyama, who hovered awkwardly in the back, too nervous to move.
you noticed.
“kageyama?” you called gently. “don’t you want some?”
he froze. “m-me?”
“of course,” you said, smiling. “you’re working hard too.”
slowly, like he was approaching a sacred shrine, kageyama stepped forward. you handed him a rice ball. your fingers brushed his.
that was it. kageyama tobio was gone.
his face turned crimson, his heart pounded like a jackhammer, and before he could stop himself, he blurted—
“THANK YOU. YOU’RE AMAZING.”
silence.
you blinked, then laughed softly. “you’re welcome.”
hinata dropped his snack. “ARE YOU KIDDING ME—”
but kageyama didn’t even hear him. he was too busy staring at the rice ball in his hands like it was proof that miracles existed.
for the rest of practice, he played like a man possessed. sets crisp, serves sharp, tosses perfect.
everyone noticed.
“guess all he needed was a rice ball from his crush,” tanaka muttered.
kageyama overheard. his ears turned scarlet. “SHUT UP!!”
but he couldn’t stop smiling.
