apparently during the robot fight in the pittsburgh show. after the spine got defeated- hatchworth started EATING the spine's remains? now i know it's a silly joke. but,, hatchworth's green core (again, i know it's just a funny lil light change). regents park have finally posted costumes!

and i've got things to say.

soooooooo they look,,,, eh. that's it. imo, not exceptional.. not amazing. but meh. firstly. the ears? oh gosh- okay they're not HORRENDOUS, but they just look like cheap cat ears you'd get on a head band. like they all vary in different shapes, like they're either wearing caps with ears or like i mentioned head bands. and displaying different types of cat ears aren't bad, but omg.. the way they look. is not it imo. LIKE ONE OF THE CATS EARS IS SUPER LONG- TO THE POINT IT LOOKS LIKE DOG EARS, and one of them is rounded so much and floppy- it just looks cheap. firstly. why are they nearly all the same colours? 3 cats are the same colour, 4 cats are the same colour etc etc you get the idea. like you CAN'T even tell who is who (and that is worrying)

changing cat colours isn't a bad thing necessarily, like non-replica will do that and then they look fine. but dude in this one... they all look so similar. like i legit don't know who is who! because they all have the same varying colours etc.

like even in non-replica productions, they still make it so not every cat is LITERALLY the SAME BUT DIFFERENT SHADE OF COLOURRRRRR. and rum tum tugger doesn't have his iconic mane!!!! two of them, who i think are tantomile and coricopat (this is my personal nit pick) have a pattern on their outfits look like giraffe spots. i can't even tell who is skimbleshanks, or EVEN WHO IS MISTOFELEES!! you can see clearly everyone's hair. which imo, really takes away from the "wow these are cats" to the point where it's like "wow.. these are people dressed up as cats" like i feel a bad saying this, but it just looks like they're wearing cheap halloween costumes for a party? (especially the make-up, there's no cat noses or cat lip. which further strengenths the "wow these are just.. people." (like ik there'll be slinking around, and being all touchy like a cat. which is great! love that! but like,,, i just don't know anymore)

Yeah... oh. well.

I'm underwhelmed... I don't hate them but I was hoping for a lot more!

We have a weird mix of bits of clothing and anthropomorphic costumes - what's the design language here? Are we representing people dressed as cats; or cats dressed as people?

The ears on headbands over hair - mostly over hair - are we symbolising the performers wearing the cat identity? How does that interact with some clothed, some not?

This screams "We didn't have the rights to John Napier's Designs" - like so many non-replica productions... without understanding how John Napier's designs work so well! There is a crucial, fundamental element of illusion, disguising the human form. For example, shoulder fluffies make the very human shoulder/neck shape literally fuzzy, it means our primitive shape recognition goes "...huh?" The shoulder fuzzies, the arm and leg warmers disguising the human arm and leg shapes.... John Napier's wigs hiding the human ears, and making the head proportions less human, much closer to feline.

These costumes don't seem to have a different language as an alternative though. I fear the Giraffe twins are Cori and Tant... the yellow pair next to them would be Mungo and Rumple.

The front row really confuses me though. We got a guy with strong diagonal stripey fluff - feels as close to John Napier's design as they can get. Then we have a girl in a shirt? With her hair below the ear cap, she absolutely feels like she's wearing clothes. But then the girl next to her- Victoria? - has so much body fluff, and her human hair and face contrasts so much against her costume and ears. Is the intent to make her a human in a very fuzzy costume? Why does one have clothes and the other doesn't?

There's very little reference to actual Cats here... I see giraffe prints and solid natural colours. There's no calico, or tabby, or seal point... no Tuxedo. Is Mistoffelees far left, with very close together ears?

So what IS the intent? if we're not drawing on street cats, we're not drawing on human society, it just feels like... Not John Napier.

(OF COURSE I am ONLY criticising costume design here, not makeup, not construction, not performance!)

just a quick yap about CATS 2026

with everything i've kinda watched from videos regarding the new '26 prodruction. there's actually new vid on the regents park open air theatre. and idk if im absolutely sure- but i think i clocked some of it. too me. in rehearsals. you can faintly make out the pics of the costumes and make-up on the wall? even if you zoom in, you cant really make out the faces. HOWEVER, the costumes are cat coloured, and one of the cats? (maybe rum tum tugger) has the feathery, fluffy tail.

(here's one fairly blurry picture)

but idk,, it looks promising to me? and it seems they do have wigs, or not- if that is the case then maybe they'll incorporate cat ears into their real hair?). even if the wigs aren't like before, they seem to me still stylized in their own way, making each character stand out another thing is- i feel like even if their faces aren't completely covered in makeup, i think as long as they have a cat nose and feline lips? everything and everyone will hopefully be pleased /lh

and a quick lil observation kinda. with the choreography etc. it looks like the actors won't be afraid to 'mess' up their makeup. i've seen (cassandra- i think) properly nuzzle against pouncival too in an earlier vid of rehearsals. so yayy too hopefully no more air nuzzling lolol, and we'll get the cute interactions once more.

I have such a thing for the way David’s mouth looks when he speaks/sings. Bunny’s when she speaks/sings, too. I dunno, I always notice peoples’ lips/mouths and find some of them like really aesthetically pleasing when they speak/sing. Is that weird? xD
