i have grizz discourse because i’m rewatching the society again (i know - i hate me too) and i have opinions because i feel like people have idealized grizz a lot to make him into like…a soft boiTM, but grizz is kind of hard core sometimes lol
when emily was dying, grizz was straight up telling luke to prepare the others because he knew she was going to die and there was nothing they could do, so, there was no point pretending they could help her. once he knew what was happening, grizz was like, “welp. that’s that, i suppose.”
he was clearly upset by it, obviously, but he was also very, very realistic. to a point of being really blunt. luke and the others were all freaking out and looking to him to save her, but grizz was extremely calm about what was happening and just stood back and let it happen. he understood it, and he worked through it quickly and just knew there was nothing they could do.
then, before she was even dead, he was already saying that they had to decide if they wanted to bury her in the forest or carry her back to town with them. like, before anyone else had even fully processed what was happening.
when they got back, grizz was the one stepping up to make the arrangements to bury her. he also dug cassandra’s grave. he was probably the one who took the lead on that, too.
THEN grizz was one of the people who advocated for dewey’s execution (and campbell’s). even though he couldn’t go through with it in the end. he still helped make that decision, and pushed for it.
grizz is a realist if i’ve ever seen one. he isn’t soft and mushy. grizz is actually pretty intense. he sees things as they are, from a logical, practical perspective, and he deals with them accordingly.
i dunno - i just think it makes him a bit one dimensional to turn him into a soft cupcake just because he’s sweet and different with sam. of course he is - he likes him. he’s more open and vulnerable with sam because that’s a situation/relationship where it’s safe for him to be that way.
he’s the same way with allie. he feels comfortable and safe with her, so, he opens up.
that’s just a different facet of his personality, but it’s not all of him.
but then, again, when things went off the rails a bit with sam, grizz was back to being realistic about their situation - brutally so. he does it again on the expedition when they’re all speculating about what would happen if they came back without an answer. he just straight up says, “yeah, we’ll all die in a month if we don’t find something.”
grizz can be pretty intimidating when he wants to be. he stood with luke and went in on dewey when he was locked up in the wine cellar. he was pretty unsympathetic toward him (as he should have been, of course. dewey was a piece of shit).
grizz warned allie’s closer friends that if they didn’t talk to her about making a decision regarding dewey and campbell’s punishments, he was going to do it himself. and no one took that to mean, like, “awe, okay, good. grizz’ll talk to her,” that was like, “fuck we better talk to her otherwise grizz is gonna go spit some truth at her.”
allie had to tell grizz not to make a scene when they saw campbell after the trial. like, grizz isn’t afraid of campbell whatsoever - and he’s certainly not afraid of confrontation (which, again, we see when the guard are all talking shit and being morons and grizz gets visibly pissed off at them, then again when he comes back and sees allie hurt and that shit’s turned upside down - he gets in luke’s face about it).
idk man. i’m just thinking out loud, but i just think grizz is a tough fuckin’ cookie, my dudes. it’s part of what makes him interesting, to me.
