it's genuinely so funny like the reason ppl thought the dnc 2024 autopsy report wasn't being released was bc the results would show that the dnc strategies were dogshit, but i dont think anyone predicted that the actual reason was bc the report itself was so dogshit (the dnc chair literally asked his friend to do it and the guy said yeah ill do it. for free even)
like the incompetence is insane. you could not make this shit up

still makes me laugh that kamala harris thought allying herself w liz cheney was a viable strategy
Hello! <3 I’d like to find a good history book about post 1947 India (if possible sm serious and ‘academic’ (ie well construed and not too ‘journalistic’) with an emphasis on political history), and I was wondering if per chance you had any specific advice on this topic (whether an historian or a specific book rec). I try to always be careful when looking for works abt recent historical periods, both bc of possible political biases + the fact that the anglosphere is really full of journalistic history books, whose rigour/quality I’m never completely sure of. If you don’t have anything in mind /don’t have the time to answer though I don’t want to bother you – I’ll find a solution by myself (I’ve already found a few books in my University library) ;)
hmmmm this is a bit tough because I haven’t read much contemporary Indian history per se, but some books which you might find interesting:
The Indian Ideology by Perry Anderson
Utsa Patnaik’s stuff in general - she’s very good on the history of agriculture & political economy in India (The Republic of Hunger and The Long Transition)
Dispossession, Deprivation, and Development by Arindam Banerjee & C.P. Chandrashekhar
India Since Independence ed. Bipan Chandra (Bipan Chandra in general is also good)
India’s Villages in the 21st Century: Revisits and Revisions ed. Surinder S Jodhka & Edward Simpson
No Free Left by Vijay Prashad
Khaki Shorts & Saffron Flags: A Critique of the Hindu Right
The Oxford Companion to Politics in India
Ramachandra Guha can be woefully centrist (besides revealing himself to be a bit of a spineless coward after 2020′s anti-CAA protests) but a) he along with Madhav Gadgil are the best historians on India’s ecology/environment & environmental movements and b) he does have good stuff to say about contemporary Indian political history on the whole
The North East as a whole is woefully underrepresented here but I recommend looking at Sanjoy Hazarika’s two books Strangers of the Mist and Strangers No More and In The Name Of the Nation by Sanjib Baruah for basic postcolonial background
If anyone has any other recommendations, pls leave them in the replies!

does a show or movie being reactionary impact your enjoyment in it?
my cop out answer is that all commercial mass produced media is reactionary in some form or another so it’s impossible for me to evaluate a case in which it’s not reactionary. & also I primarily engage with art as a political object, I don’t really experience the type of artistic engagement I’ve heard people talk about (eg comfort watching, self-care watching, etc) so at the risk of sounding like a massive pretentious cunt I’m unable to not incorporate a show/movie’s politics into my evaluation and enjoyment of it. Star Wars for example is reactionary in many ways - I don’t necessarily enjoy it “in spite of” those elements, they are part of my enjoyment of it because they are part of ‘the text’ of Star Wars and removing/ignoring them would fundamentally alter Star Wars. Which doesn’t mean I agree with/endorse those things obviously, but I don’t know how to cordon them off from my enjoyment of SW if that makes sense. I feel like people usually talk about critical evaluation as a purely negative project, as always ‘taking away from’ their enjoyment, which has to sit outside of critical evaluation, which is not how I experience my own enjoyment of media
I think complaints about "reading comprehension" on tumblr are misguided for a lot of reasons, but one of the more obvious ones is that they assume that irritating misreadings are the product of a failed attempt at good faith engagement. Which sure they sometimes are, but more commonly and more egregiously a lot of people have clearly just skim read a post and jumped to whatever conclusions are most inflammatory or can be neatly slotted into their preferred discourse.
Like for many people it's just a lot easier and more satisfying to go on a self-righteous assault against the broad shape of whatever ideas are currently pissing them off the most, rather than take the time to actually parse what another person is saying before earnestly considering anything novel information they've encountered. Plus getting into stupid arguments online is apparently many people's hobby, so they'll jump at even the slightest pretense to get into one. Why bother finding a giant when you can squint your eyes and charge at the nearest windmill
