basically. aro jon headcanon:

martin is of course an eternal romantic (hence the romantic4platonic ship post) but its pretty clear that he's content with whatever jon is willing to offer and nothing more. they can get so qpr about it. (as an aro guy myself i would be much more willing to enter a relationship as long as it was clear i would not have to reciprocate any romance if i dont want to)

martin says i love you and jon says i know. and that can be enough

HOWEVER i started my aro headcanon earlier in the show and listening to s5 was just like. he would not say all that ('i love you'). and so because angst is always much more compelling than fluff i also have these to chew on:

the dehumanization and unwilling self-transformation of the past seasons makes jon feel like the events of s5 are happening to Someone Else. including his relationship with martin. romance is an out of body experience and baby im depersonalizing so hard (we should just kiss like real people do)

was it himself or something else that woke up in that hospital bed? was it himself or something else that ended the world? was it himself or something else that turned it back? was it himself or something else that loved martin?

maybe the human part of him could have loved martin, but jon's never felt like he was human enough.

(as discussed in the linked post) it's the end of the world. martin's the only person jon has left. there's a lot that you can lie to yourself about when the fate of the world is at stake

why did he say i love you that first time? why did he keep saying it again and again, each time with a wider smile and each time deeper in the hole he's dug? jon and martin were their own self-dedicated cult of fear. romance is a ritual, and like every ritual you have to make yourself believe and lose yourself in the headrush, never show how much terrifies you. and like every ritual, you can do all the steps right and it will still fizzle into ash. and the first and only time they kissed was in the tower, because martin was about to stab him through the heart and maybe a kiss isn't all that different in its devastation
