Sarah never told me where she was from. You’d think that’s the first thing people talk about when someone new moves in next door. Or sits next to you in class. Or both.
“Class, this is Sarah. Ulrich High’s newest transfer student,” Ms. Langdon announced. “She’ll be joining us for the rest of the semester.”
She followed her announcement with some light clapping trying to convince the class to do the same. But they were all too… distracted. I was distracted too.
“I love your…” Jenny Collins called out. But she stopped herself and continued working on her homework.
“Where are you from?” Billy Sanders asked. But he wasn’t trying to be friendly. You could hear it in his voice he was covering up his shock.
“I’m from super far away.” Sarah answered. “Like really far away. You wouldn’t know the place if I told you.” She laughed. No one else did.
“Well if it gives me a tan as lovely as yours, I think I have my summer vacation plans,” Ms. Langdon nervously laughs before showing Sarah to her seat. Beside me.
This gave me a chance to take in the lovely sight that is Sarah Danvers. Long black hair, beautiful dark eyes, and tinder red skin. I’ve seen a tan before, my aunt Gretchen gets them all the time, it left her browninsh red. The type of red I see on Sarah, however, was like fire and I have never seen anything like it.
“Well class, let’s begin,” Ms. Langdon calls. She wanted to get everyone to stop staring at Sarah. I had different plans.
“So, what’s your name?” Sarah asked me.
I try to shake my trance as best as possible. “I’m Ryan. Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Sarah said with a wink.
And like that, Sarah’s attention was turned to Ms. Langdon’s lecture about math or whatever. My attention was on the lovely red girl sitting next to me. Sarah.
