Something that I notice when some people get into drama and controversy is that after a little bit, they come back and reveal that they're trans or just want to use different pronouns. And I've seen quite a few people accuse the subject of ire of using the trans community and the trans identity to get flack off their back, and that them coming out is entirely disingenuous.
I was always wary of that claim but when I was younger, I used to just go along with that type of rumor. But thinking about the Milo Winter situation made me realize that even if the person comes back with the same bad behavior they were driven out of their community for, they still ended up doing some kind of self reflection in response to their controversy. Having a lot of people be upset with you really makes you think about yourself even if you arrive at the wrong conclusions about your behavior. And in thinking about themselves due to shitty behavior, some people end up realizing that they'd prefer to be referred to as different pronouns, another name, a different gender.
And frankly, I don't care about that. It's their life. If they realize later it doesn't actually suit them, that's fine too. I understand wanting to defend a marginalized community like the trans community from what you may believe are bad actors trying to hide behind a shield, and I don't doubt that some people in these situations may be trying to do that, but I'm extremely hesitant to just tell people "you're not trans, you're just faking" just because they discovered themselves during a drama or I just don't like them.
