âIâve made my name now. Â Iâm a journalist. Â I live in a nice neighborhood. Â But it was hard growing up in Paris as a black girl. Â Iâm from the island of Martinique. Â It used to be a French colony. Â There were no jobs on our island, so I came to study in Paris at the age of twelve. Â Things were very difficult. Â I was one of the only black students at my school. Â There was a lot of racism. Â One teacher especially made my life difficult. Â She taught economics. Â It wasnât my best subject because I was more interested in literature, so occasionally Iâd talk to my friend during class. Â And the teacher failed me for âdisrespecting her.â Â She told me to go back to âthe coconut islands.â Â She said Iâd never amount to anything in life. Â I ended up pursuing a more artistic path. Â And a few years later I became the principal dancer in a big musical. Â It was a showcase of music from my island. Â Many famous musicians participated. Â I convinced my white friend to invite that economics teacher to the performance. Â She had no clue I was involved. Â When the show was over, I walked straight into the audience, found her seat, and asked: âDoes this count as doing something with my life?â (Paris, France)
âI donât know why my mother hated me. Â She had a sickness that you could not see. Â But she convinced me that I was sick. Â And that everything was because of me. Â And that Iâm a monster. Â She criticized everything. Â My way of eating. Â My way of speaking. Â My way of dressing. Â Anything that brought me joy, she would deny me. Â If I defended myself, she would hit me. Â I was terrified of lunch and dinner because thatâs when I had to face her. Â I spent my entire childhood alone. Â I just played with my cats in the garden. Â Or sat on the floor of my bedroom. Â Iâd try so hard to leave my body because I didnât want to be on earth. Â And thatâs when the spirits and fairies would come to me. Â Even Mother Mary came to me. Â I was never afraid of them. Â Theyâd comfort me. Â I remember being seven years old, sitting alone beneath a tree, talking to the fairies. Â Another little girl walked up and asked what game I was playing. Â Thatâs when I realized nobody else could see what I was seeing. Â And itâs been a very lonely existence since then.â (Paris, France)
