steve doesnt even know he has a new neighbor until one day he's in the backyard sunbathing and suddenly has 50 pounds of dog in his lap, staring at him slobbering all over him just panting right in his face

once steve gets over the initial shock of having a strange animal jump on him and realizes the dog is pretty chill he takes to scratching him and baby talking and asking where he came from, and thats when he hears a booming voice yelling from over the fence and the dog barks in response but makes no effort to move

so soon a hot blond in a cut off tee and denim shorts, curls in a pony tail, is breaking into steves backyard and steve has to assume this guy is the dogs owner

billys calling zeppe over and he finally gets off steve. billys apologizing promising it wont happen again - knows how a certain group of people get real uppity about dogs and quite honestly he's willing to commit murder if anyone tries taking the dog away from him so

but steve - once he manages to put his tongue back in his mouth - is saying no worries, the dog was fine but jokingly adds on he must not be very obedient

to which billy responds "or maybe i just trained him to sniff out the cute ones."

By the end Jonathan’s portfolio is filled with some of his favourite images like a warm, golden lit full body shot of Billy slightly out of focus, his head tilted down, hair falling into his eyes as he holds one arm out with Max dangling from it as he teasingly swings her out of the water of a pool, her hair thrown back and streaming down her face wildly as she laughs.

One of Billy lying in the back of his car with his eyes cut to the side and his jacket tucked in beside him like he’s been caught from a nap but it’s moody and blue-toned like the night and his face is enigmatic and turned from the camera.

Another, almost too-close-up that is almost claustrophobic of Billy’s mouth and lower jaw, capturing the shine of his lower lip and drawing the eye to a scar nearly hidden in the curve of his lip. One of Billy’s upper body from the back as he stands facing an empty road, moonlight catching on wayward curls, the line of his shoulders tilted as he draws his hands up, just barely caught in the corner is a pair of feet in dark boots, like someone is approaching, eerie and seductive.

Not that it’s really much better now like you still hear horror stories, but culturally we’re a lot more aware and concerned about things like abuse.

Back when billy was growing up nobody would really bat an eye at you smacking your kid around so long as they didn’t like land in the hospital or something.

You’d have young girls turning tricks on the street and the cops arresting them only cared that they were prostitutes, not that grown men were paying to fuck children

Society back then was not built to protect the “troubled kids”. This is the environment billy was trying to survive in. And yet people ask why he didn’t get away from neil why didn’t he do this why didn’t he do that

Where was he gonna go? Best case scenario he ran away from home and ended up on the streets.

When people judge billy it will never not come off as someone speaking from incredibly privilege. And yall only ever wanna point to the success stories of people overcoming abuse and remaining good and pure or whatever bullshit

But what do you say to all the kids who have to resort to horrible things to keep themselves alive? Who don’t come out nice and innocent and friendly. Are they not worthy of a second chance because of how they responded to their trauma? Cuz that shit is still going on today. We’ve come further as a society but if you think there aren’t still kids like billy running around neglected and lashing out you’re crazy. You’re gonna sit here and tell me those kids don’t deserve healing?
