getting back into the swing of things. like this for a starter!
How many times old are you?
Who let this child in here? When does Wammy take in babies?
“I am 12. What are you doing up here?”
“No, it’s better than bread.”
Finally finding the jar in one of the boxes, he screwed the lid off with a little pop and walked back over to the bed.
“…It looks sort of like blood.”
Near shied away from it a bit, looking at the other as if he were suspicious. He didn’t seem to have any kind of bad intents towards the tiny boy, though, and realizing this, the child edged back into his personal space.
“…Is it sour?”
“No, it’s sweet.”
Beyond smiled. Wanting to be nice to Nate. Because it didn’t seem like a lot of people were.
"...Sweet...."
Shyly, the little pale child poked his finger into it and tasted it. It was good!
"Thank you."
"I'm gonna beat you!"
“Why do you always ruin everything for me! I beat you once and you declare war!” He stuck out his tongue and then puffed out his cheeks.
Near's generally expressionless face twisted into a defiant pout, and his tiny arms were immediately crossed over his chest.
"I'm not ruining anything! It's supposed to be like this, right?!"
You're under arrest!
“No, I’m not.” He would know this better than a toddler, he’s very sure.
[…]
“Um…”
Near focused really hard, face turning a little pink. He knew this! It was on the sign and he heard it a lot.
“…Rodger…W….Wammy….? Or..um…L sort of.”
Nailed it.
“Rodger Wammy?” He’s going to ignore the L part. Just ignore it. At least the first half seems to be somewhat useful even if the uncertainty with which the name is given is kind of disheartening.
“Where did you see this man last, then?”
"Yesterday."
The little boy squinted and started examining his nails. He knew, at this point, that he had definitely messed up the man's name. That wasn't Rodger's name at all. Oh well, it was close enough.

“Criminal case.”
Near stumbled over the words awkwardly, but predictably considering his age. Smiling victoriously, he started edging away from the man as slyly as possible. He was going to solve his first case when he was still shorter than Mello! He figured he’d get bigger later.
“What kind of criminal case would you need my ID for?”
If there really was a criminal case to begin with, which Shimura didn’t believe in the least. How old was this kid, anyways – three? Probably just some sort of make-believe game. The man wasn’t one to try and put a stamp on creativity – honestly, he encouraged it, especially in children – but he just wanted his ID back.
"The kind that I'm doing."
Near plucked the ID out of his pocket and waved it around in front of his face.
"So, I can't give it back until I'm done. Okay?"
"Who are you?"
Staring at the diminutive child, the man reached down to pluck him up from the back of his shirt.
“The fuckin’ boogeyman, who the fuck are ya?”
bittybabynear
Near squinted a little.
“…You aren’t made of boogers…?”
He only opened his eyes wide when he was snatched up and hoisted to the eye level of the large man. The tiny boy kicked his legs and waved his arms around, trying with no success to get down.
“Down!”
Almost immediately a booming laugh etched out from his lips.
“Are ya fuckin’ kiddin’ me? Who the fuck are ya?”
Was this a mafia whore’’s kid? Didn’t she know it wasn’t bring your kid to work day? Rod rolled his eyes as he kept the child dangling.
“I ain’t puttin’ ya down til I know who ya are.”
"Down!! Down!!"
Frustrated little arms flew around more frantically than before, legs a blur.
"I'm Near! Put me down! Down!"
The child started to figure out that the situation was probably worse than he thought once he got a good look at the big man. He was scary looking, and Near didn't have a clue as how to get back to where he needed to be.
((Eek! I died for a bit. Bad things goin on for me rn, but I'm back. ))

“No, I’m not.” He would know this better than a toddler, he’s very sure.
[…]
Near shook his head slowly.
“No, I got lost. But I’m being trained to do the detective stuff!”
He pulls out some printed out “junior FBI” badge he probably got off some kids site proudly.
“What’s your job?”
That statement is absurd and like any good adult, Mikami won’t take an absurd statement from a toddler at face value or any value at all. There’s just no way a child this small is being trained for anything except maybe preschool. Any adult would know that, of course.
“I’m a prosecutor.” He only humours the question because he vaguely knows that having a frustrated child to deal with is worse than having a child to deal with at all - and that is pretty bad already. “What’s the name of the person responsible for you?” He just needs to get this kid back where it belongs.
"Um..."
Near focused really hard, face turning a little pink. He knew this! It was on the sign and he heard it a lot.

Are you a bad guy? Or a good guy?
“I think I’m a little bit of both. Probably leaning more towards bad guy.”
“An angry, competitive person? That’s not a good combination. Are you close with him?”
“….I don’t know what you mean. We are friends. He pulls my hair. It’s ok because I’m still winning.”
“He pulls your hair? I don’t think Mello likes you.” Namikawa furrowed his eyebrows. “He seems too mean to be your friend.”
Near glanced at the floor, emotionless. A little of whatever childish energy he’d been exuding faded out.
“…He’s nicer than them.”
“Nicer than who?” Namikawa kneels beside him. “Are you going to cry, kid? I don’t want to deal with that if you do.”
“…I don’t cry. I’m not bleeding, so I don’t cry.”
His brow furrowed. How rude.
“Sorry, I’m not used to being around small children.” Namikawa stood back up, patting his head lightly. “You should go back to where you’ve come from.”
“…Ok. I can go.”
The child made his way to his feet and toddled back towards the entrance of the building, occasionally glancing back at the man before heading off alone into the cold.
Namikawa walked after him, picking him up and taking him back into the building. “Nope. I feel bad now. You can’t leave without someone making sure you’re safe.”
Near whined a little, kicking his little legs and trying to get the tall man to put him down. He was too old for this! He was a detective! He was a successor!
"Down! Down!"
Near nodded, but made no move to give it back to the man. This was for his job, after all.
“I’m collecting evidence.” he said in a tone that seemed to be cheery, though it wasn’t particularly childlike either.
If he was completely honest, Shimura really just wanted his ID back, but at this point, it would probably be best to play along. Maybe once he humored the kid, he’d get it. If he didn’t, he’d have to find the parents. Speaking of which, where the hell were they?
“Evidence for what?”
"Criminal case."
Near stumbled over the words awkwardly, but predictably considering his age. Smiling victoriously, he started edging away from the man as slyly as possible. He was going to solve his first case when he was still shorter than Mello! He figured he'd get bigger later.

Who let this child in here? When does Wammy take in babies?
“I am 12. What are you doing up here?”
Beyond frowned at both of the responses. Kids could be brutal, especially in this environment.
“It’s sweet and you can’t really have too much of it. But that’s all I have up here.”
He got up from the bed and moved to his closet to find the hidden jam jar.
Near perked up a little bit, peeking at him while he rummaged through his closet.
“It’s like bread?”
Near liked bread. He got to eat it sometimes for desserts.
“No, it’s better than bread.”
Finally finding the jar in one of the boxes, he screwed the lid off with a little pop and walked back over to the bed.
"...It looks sort of like blood."
Near shied away from it a bit, looking at the other as if he were suspicious. He didn't seem to have any kind of bad intents towards the tiny boy, though, and realizing this, the child edged back into his personal space.
"...Is it sour?"
Near’s face changed a bit after hearing the man- He had to have heard him. It was silent in the room until he spoke. That didn’t please him at all. Hands in tiny fists, the child stood on his tiptoes and tried his best to get as close to the man’s ear as possible, not that it made much of a difference with his minuscule height.
“I am Near! I am almost four years old! I live here and I am a successor!”
He said it somewhat louder this time, but still quietly, indicating his voice just wasn’t loud at all. His dark gray eyes were burning with determination, contrasting with his poker face (which did swimmingly at covering up that he was still terrified).
“I am pleased to make your acquaintance!”
Angry, was he? L could hear the bite of impatience in Near’s voice, covering up his naïveté and fear. Bravado was interesting, especially coming from someone so small.
Then again, L knew all about that, didn’t he?
Fear and anger weren’t necessarily the very best emotions for a successor to possess, but if the child didn’t know that already, he would learn soon enough. Age and size were no barriers when it came to the mind - you could be four or eighty-four. Either way, it would make no difference to L. Near wasn’t a successor yet. None of them were, at least not until they learned the art of self-control. L didn’t appreciate such a blatant failure of his first test.
“There’s no need to shout. I heard you the first time.”
Near blinked back tears and frustration. Didn't this man know why he was so desperate for his approval? He surely wouldn't have survived unless he had been brought to the orphanage that raised his protégés. He had to be the one to succeed him- if only out of an undying respect.
"......"
Staring deeply into the other man's eyes, Near started to realize what he was playing at. He figured at first he should be playing a role like Mello- after all, he was high on the list of successors. L didn't seem too impressed by his emotions, however...so the natural response would be to act as if he had none. Relaxing his brow, letting the muscles in his face fall slack, Near made himself appear emotionless with all the precision of a three year old. His efforts were visible.
"...I am sorry to have offended you."
Near’s eyes lit up when she responded positively to his presence. He had never really had seen or talked to a grown lady before. She reminded him a little of how his mother looked.
“I’m not cute. I’m a detective.”
The pint sized advocate of justice pulled out a water gun and waved it around.
“See?”
Misa laughed as she looked at the water gun and tried to keep in her giggling. So he thought he was a detective and carried around a water gun. Well he had the imagination for whatever the game was he was playing. “Oh? Well that’s cute. I’m sure you’ll be a fine detective….Um…What’s your name?”
"My name is Near."
He tucked the water gun back into his shirt, peeking up occasionally to make sure the girl wouldn't figure out where he was hiding it. He eventually seemed to finish (badly) concealing it and looked up once more.
"What's your name?"

“I am 12. What are you doing up here?”
“Who pushes you?”
Beyond wasn’t really sure what was going on here, except that this kid somehow found his way to his room and now was asking for snacks. Also that he was apparently really smart too.
“I have jam?”
Near looked down and fidgeted a little before looking up again at the older boy.
“Some of the older kids…”
He looked a little ashamed, but with how tiny he was it’s not like he could do much about his situation anyways. He figured that everything would be fine.
“…I don’t really know what that is, mister.”
Beyond frowned at both of the responses. Kids could be brutal, especially in this environment.

“I am 12. What are you doing up here?”
It wasn’t like the little ball of white interrupted anything other than his reading, but generally toddlers weren’t supposed to be wondering halls of old orphanages alone. No matter how possibly smart they were. Sighing after watching Nate struggle to get up on the bed, he got up, intending to help him, but being a bit too late for that.
“No I mean on the third floor? It’s a long way to come up here?”
He blinked a couple of times, tilting his head a little.
“I got a good grade so I’m hiding so they don’t push me.”
The tiny boy tugged out a crumpled paper and stared down at it. It was a perfect grade, and he was in a class two years ahead of his age group, but he hadn’t really tried because he was hungry.
“Do you have snacks?”
“Who pushes you?”
