Matt was lost. He had absolutely no idea where he was. Not at Wammys House, that’s for sure. And neither near Mello. The redhead had tried to call for him a number of times, but there had been no answers. What he did have, though, was his game. And while he was worried, lost, and a little hungry, he still needed a break, right?

He pushed himself up from the wall in the shopping centre, and walked out. And after he had walked a few steps, he went back to the game. Dodging most people along the street, as he kept his eyes fixed to the devise. But when it got to a particularly hard part, he lost all concentration and direction - and so, bumped - hard - into a stranger. Or who he would later find out, be L. The impact, a) frightened the life out of him and b) knocked him almost fully over.

I haven’t! I’m very sorry already though, this answer will likely disappoint a lot of people, but here we go.

Why I like them: I’m not a fan of L, but I appreciate how he is clearly structured differently from a shining ‘good’ hero figure. He’s someone who does the right things for the ‘wrong’ reasons instead of someone who is self-righteously convinced of his moral. L is self-righteous alright but he knows he’s doing most things for himself. I think there is a lot to be done and fleshed out about L’s inner workings that has not really been touched upon on the show and it’d surely be interesting to write out - just not for me, as he’s not my kind of thing.Further, I like how the humour scenes involving him are structured. For someone this plot-relevant, he makes a great comic relief.

Why I don’t: Most of the reasons I dislike L only have half-way to do with his character, which is kind of awful of me. I think L is written with a weird undertone of author favoritism? I am supposed to care about this character, I am supposed to think he’s oh-so-quirky, mysterious and interesting etc… It might not be a vibe everyone gets when reading first arc, but it really annoys me. L reminds me of this own character someone is super proud of (for this reason his super mixed nationalities amuse me a lot - they fit into that trope so well).Further, a lot of his fans annoy me. It should be noted, this does not apply to most of the current tumblr fandom but to my experience in DN fandom prior to coming here. I think my enthusiasm for L just faded away with each time someone said they stopped watching after his death - second Arc has all my favourite characters and because I am also very childish, I ended up doing that thing where I blame L for my faves getting no love.Now, all of this wouldn’t sway me against L if his character was anything my type, but above all, L is not that interesting to me. Which isn’t to say he’s not interesting as a character, but he doesn’t hit any of my emotional spots. tl;dr: I never was interested in L enough so that my liking of his character could have endured my annoyance with his treatment by the fandom as well as DN official media.

Favorite episode (scene if movie): Him talking to the Wammy kids in the special chapter - my bias towards Wammy kids showing heavily. I am way too into fictional institutions trying to use sad children for their purposes, I swear. I like how he talks to them there too though.

Favorite season/movie: I just said all this stuff about how I like L not being a good person and now I gotta confess to being a total hypocrite: I love novel!LchangetheWorLd!L a lot. Like, I realize this novel is the most cliched story of niceness with nice people and all… and I see it as a completely separate thing from the DN main universe… but I really like L… in that novel…..

Favorite line: This much LctW talk is not what anybody signed up for, but I lOVE his ‘Each of these lights in the windows represents the happiness of a human being’ talk because I am a cheesy cheesy person who is easily brought to tears with the cheesiest cheesiest stuff.But okay no, that is OOC for the actual L. I just don’t have any other line that particularly sticks out to me, so we have to live with this. (If I had any, it would probably be from AN, haha)

Favorite outfit: There is not much choice here. Thanks, L.

OTP: I have reached this point where I have no strong L ship left anymore…. I am really entertained by the idea of L/Matsuda though and I wonder if anybody would be able to write it compelling enough to get me sold on it.

Brotp: L’s and Watari’s relation is probably more complicated than we are ever shown and it’s also really sweet, so the choice here is obvious.

Head Canon: My biggest headcanon for L goes along with what I think AN strongly implies: his entire Ryuuzaki persona is an act. The L we see in volume 1, you know the yoga boy who can stand up straight, is much closer to L’s real personality than Ryuuzaki ever was.L takes detective codes of peope he’s beaten and by that he doesn’t only mean their names, he means their entire identity. He’s beaten B so he took on B’s Ryuuzaki persona, altering it only so much that it fit him better and was comfortable to live as 24/7. We’ve never seen L act as Ryuuzaki when alone, so I strongly stand by it being all a lie.

Unpopular opinion: L is overrated. L is not a good person. L’s death was a good plot decision. He and Light are not meant to be either. (Seriously, I can stand the Lawlight ship more actually when I don’t consider them as perfect matches, star-crossed enemies or whatnot.)

A wish: My headcanon being true, selfishly, haha.
