11 Things People with Depression Would Like You to Understand | psych2go
Hey! I did the voiceover!
10 is so important though. If someone discloses to you that they have depression, absolutely NEVER ask “why?”. There is no one reason why. For many of us, there’s not even a shortlist of reasons why. Its a million things dogpiling in our brains, many/most of which are too abstract for us to understand ourselves, let alone try to make you understand. The main reason is “my brain has a chemical imbalance.” Someone with depression doesn’t produce as much of certain “happy” hormones like dopamine and serotonin as a “healthy” brain does, and doesn’t correctly balance those hormones, and that’s entirely beyond our control. Things like diet, exercise, and positivity can help a little, sure, but it’s not a cure or even very effective treatment for most cases. Its like giving someone with a cold a box of tissues and expecting them to feel all better immediately. The tissues are helpful to make them feel better, sure, but they won’t cure the cold. The chemical imbalance is why people with untreated depression often turn to drugs and alcohol, which produce those chemicals for us, a bit like antidepressants, but they are highly addictive and make it so we can’t be happy or producce those hormones without the drugs, while antidepressants are designed to help our brains make them, and hopefully, for us to eventually be healthy without them, and to be relatively easy to get off of. Coming off antidepressants may cause problems like grogginess or headaches, but that’s far preferable to trying to get off of illicit drugs or alcohol. However, many people will fight depression and need these meds and maybe even therapy their whole lives, and that’s ok, too. They can still live happy and fulfilling lives, and they are not weak or broken. Antidepressants help to balance those chemicals better, and essentially make our brains function more similarly to yours, and are nothing to be ashamed of. They’re the psychological equivalent of a wheelchair for someone who cannot walk very far or at all. They exist to make us more able to function like “normal” and to lead healthy, happy, independent lives. Therapy can help us work through issues in our life which contribute to the chemical imbalance, whether it be something “major” like childhood trauma, or “simpler” things like day to day stress, or feelings of inadequacy. Quite often, the chemical imbalance causes the problems like stress and insecurity, which in turn worsen the chemical imbalance, rather than those factors existing independently of it and causing the chemical imbalance in the first place. Sometimes, the chemical imbalance exists for no reason except “because it just does,” and that’s ok too. So when you ask us “why” we have depression, you leave us scrambling to explain something we really can’t explain, and feeling completely invalidated and uncared about, as well as a bit humiliated. So please, never ask someone why they have depression (or any mental illness, for that matter). Just ask them how you can help, and be there to support them.
me: *still has feelings after waking up* me: what the fuck
I’m sorry that i have no energy and I’m sorry I’m depressed and can’t sleep at night and I’m sorry that when I do fall asleep I sleep until 3 and I’m sorry I’m no fun to be around and I’m sorry I’m so insecure and can’t eat the same food you do and im sorry I’m going no where in life and have no reason to even wake up.

the pizza guy just looked straight behind me, smiled, and went “you both enjoy your pizza” ? i’m alone in my apartment???
*narrows eyes*
As I said before give 1 of 2 responses: 1) Smile and shake you head and point to nothing, “Oh no, he doesn’t like pizza.” Then close the door. 2) Wide eyes and whisper in a scared voice. “You can see her too.”
IT GOT BETTER
Turn around and yell at the nothing “You were supposed to stay hidden!”
Now, a half year later you’re still on my mind. But I hope i will never see you again, I pray i will never hear your voice or smell your parfume when i’m walking through the streets in town. But can anyone please tell me why the fuck am I missing you? Do I miss the idea of you? Do I miss the memories.. am I sad cause I know this won’t happen again.. at least not with you? Do I just miss someone who treats me like you did before you left? Do I just feel alone? Or do I just like this kind of self-harm?
Get out of my head (via timeforsomewine)
Have you ever watched the person you love slowly lose interest in you? It starts off little, you can’t quite put your finger on it, but something is different, something has changed. Everything feels slightly off, off like a monday. You can almost hear it in their voice, you can see it in their eyes. You think it’s you, you start over thinking every single little thing, wondering what you did, where it all went wrong, how you can fix it. It starts off with little things like waking up to no text, calls become fewer and farther between, the lack of effort, emotion and the excuses begin to pile up. Soon it starts tearing you apart, the feeling of not being good enough begins to make you feel physically sick. Soon you find yourself hysterically crying in your car at three in the morning because you can’t hold yourself together anymore. You know it’s coming, you know you can’t do anything to stop it. The aching doesn’t stop.
Crazy how accurate this is man
getting up at 6 am by choice: wow what a beautiful sunrise! the house is so peaceful and quiet. i feel really tired but i don't have to do anything but just sit here and enjoy the morning. what a pleasant feeling
getting up at 6 am because you have to: these covers draped upon my mortal coil have become the dirt above my casket. my corpse refuses to unsettle the earth to rise from its grave. i have been dead for centuries and have no intentions to assimilate once more into the tragic world of the living
self-care (for anxiety)
i wanted to share some things i do for self-care because it is so important that you take care of yourself. these might not work for everybody and certainly there are many more.
have a playlist of songs that give you space. songs that you could think to or fall asleep to. especially softer songs that just give you comfort and breathing room when you need it, and then put it on when you do.
keep a piece of paper in your wallet or whatever is with you at all times that has a note or quote of reassurance on it. if you need some suggestions, i personally like quotes from the founder of TWLOHA’s book “If You Feel Too Much”.
let yourself have a routine. example: wake up, eat breakfast, do something you like (reading, tumblr) for 5 minutes, take a shower get dressed, play with your dog. sleep, sleep, sleep. drink lots of water, eat what makes you feel good, exercise if that helps even if it’s just a short walk. just a make time for the little things because they matter so much. sometimes your routine is the only structure your day will have and that could help.
turn off your phone for some period of time everyday. let yourself have some time without worrying about what you’re missing, it will be there when you get back.
reward yourself. even if its just with a cookie or new notebook, when you feel like you have accomplished something or made progress you deserve to celebrate.
allow time to get places if rushing / being late makes you anxious. wake up a few minutes early. let your friends and family know that being early is important to your mental health even if it doesn't “make sense” to them.
you’re allowed to avoid situations or people you know will make you anxious. it’s okay to prefer to stay home on saturday night, it’s also okay to try and go out and decide to leave if you start to feel anxious. it’s not fair that you have to live with something that literally affects how you live, but you have to realize that it is real despite what anyone tells you. yes, i want you to be able to live life to it’s fullest but i also understand that that looks differently for people who deal with anxiety.
before you have to make a spontaneous decision, give yourself or ask for the time you need to properly make it. even if it’s at a checkout line, if you need more time then ask for it. it’s okay. you can be spontaneous, but don’t force yourself to be.
keep a list of things or situations that set of or trigger your anxiety. this can be helpful if your friends and family want to understand, if you decide to seek out a counselor/therapist, and also just for yourself so you have a better understanding of what affects you. also understand that sometimes anxiety might just happen for no apparent reason. you could feel it anywhere at anytime for no reason. in that case don’t be upset at yourself for feeling it, just do your best to get through it.
it’s okay to not watch the news. it’s okay that you can’t help everybody. we live in a scary world and if watching the news makes you feel worse you shouldn’t put yourself through that. if you can, ask a friend or family member to text you if something is going on that could immediately impact you so that you are informed enough to stay safe.
if you get anxiety from missing out or having nothing to do for too long, try to fill up your days ahead of time by making plans even if it’s going to the grocery store or mall. if you get anxiety from being too busy, schedule or set aside time to be alone or take a nap. you might have to do both at different times. that’s okay.
if a you start to get anxiety / have a panic attack in a public place or any place that you feel you need to get out of, then get out of it. go to a bathroom or a dressing room or a hallway. it’s okay to walk out of a classroom or a crowd at a show even if you thought you wanted to be there, don’t force yourself to stay. if you need space, find it. breathe.
don’t let anyone discredit the things that help you. they don’t understand.
i know you are going to want to hide it, to pretend it isn’t happening sometimes. you deserve to feel safe and to be understand and not everyone is going to unfortunately. but know that you’re allowed to express what you’re feeling, that most people want to help but don’t know how. i know it’s embarrassing but you didn’t ask for this, it’s not your fault. be honest if you want to because you deserve that.
find ways to focus your energy. find outlets to express what you’re feeling. all of that isn’t meant to stay inside. some of the best painters, writers, musicians came to that as a way to express. you don’t have to be ‘good’, just loving to do it is enough to do it. find what you love and let yourself get lost in it, and also find yourself in it.
so many people don’t low how to deal with what you’re experiencing. if they ask or express wanting to help, just tell them. “i need some water” or “i need to leave” are simple but things they might not understand will help you.
after you have a panic / anxiety attack, take extra care of yourself. your body just went through war and you probably feel terrible. sleep in, drink lots of water, take a bath, take a nap, paint, cancel a plan. do whatever you need to do. if you have a headache you can take ibuprofen, it may also help to stay in dim lighting. if your body hurts try heating / cooling pads. don’t dismiss the fact that your mental health also affects your physical.
