you are a memory.

plenty of time had passed since he’d last seen her. and while he was sure they could’ve both passed the interaction off on just wanting some kind of connection in the middle of battle, well, he’d much rather it have turned this way.  “ of course i assumed the drink was still on the table. i mean, i’m pretty sure we basically made a promise. i hold onto my promises. ”  as she spoke, he shook his head gently, keeping his gaze on her.  “ you seem like the kind of woman that doesn’t mind a shitty bar and a good beer. but you know i’d take you wherever you want. ”  still, he had a place in mind  --  somewhere somewhat quiet, relaxed, where they’d be able to just chat the night away. though his mind couldn’t help but wander to the possibility of an after.  “ i think no matter where we’d end up, i’d be wanting the same outcome, but i guess it depends on if i still have that same charm as before, hm? ”  a part of him already felt the two of them falling back into the same banter, the same teasing words they had all of that time ago.  “ i hope i live up to your memory, ”  he started, a small smile tugging at the corner of lips lips.  “ because you’re definitely living up to mine. ”

a  hint  of  a  laugh  escaped  his  lips,  quieting  himself  with  a  small  shake  of  his  head.  “ i  wormed  my  way  back  in,  hm?  well,  i’ll  be  glad  to  take  you  up  on  that  drink  i  promised  you  forever  ago. ”  a  beat.  “ especially  now  since  you  can’t  use  the  ‘i’m  doing  my  job’  excuse  anymore  to  get  me  to  try  to  act  professional. ”

there  was  a  hint  of  a  subtle  smirk  that  pulled  at  the  corner  of  his  mouth,  leaning  back  against  the  wall  he  was  standing  near.  hands  moved  to  rest  slightly  in  his  pockets  as  he  began  to  speak,  “ but  that  won’t  get  you  anywhere. ”  a  beat.  “ not  with  me,  at  least. ”

he’d  imagined  this  going  a  lot  of  ways.  and  yet  he  wasn’t  sure  if  his  mind  was  just  making  up  all  of  the  different  scenarios  just  to  torture  him  or  to  prove  to  him  that  there  was  somehow  a  way  for  them  to  speak  again  without  ripping  the  other’s  head  off.  once  upon  a  time  things  had  made  sense  between  them.  and  now?  well,  now  he  wasn’t  even  sure  what  to  think.  “ see,  you’re  too  good  at  your  job.  i  have  people  waiting.  the  bodyguards  weren’t  for  you  necessarily.  they  were  in  case  you  sent  frank. ”  with  a  small  signal  of  his  hand,  he  turned  back  to  meet  her  gaze.  “ and  just  like  that,  they’re  leaving. ”  a  beat.  “ never  can  be  too  careful.  i  trust  you,  but  i  also  know  you’ve  tried  to  kill  me  before. ”  he  got  quiet  for  a  few  moments,  stuffing  his  hands  into  his  pockets  of  his  pants.  “ i  have  information  if  you  want  it.  little  crumbs.  no  perfectly  sealed  envelope  this  time.  if  you  want  to  have  concrete  evidence,  you  can  find  it  yourself.  isn’t  that  what  you  want?  so  you  don’t  risk  your  job  taking  all  of  it  from  me? ”  she  was  the  same  as  he’d  remembered  her,  though  she  was  a  certain  hardness  to  her.  the  smile  that  he  could  remember  on  her  lips  was  gone,  replaced  with  barely  even  a  hint  of  what  once  was.  “ sorry  that  i’m  not  so  easy  to  hate  anymore.  i  guess  i  had  to  get  back  some  of  my  charm,  hm?  i’m  not  the  same  person  that  you  chose  to  hate.  my  hands  are  clean.  i’m  doing  what  i  need  to  survive. ”  he  still  looked  over  his  shoulder,  waiting  for  frank  to  appear.  but  maybe,  just  for  now,  he  was  safe.  “ i’m  sure  you’ll  find  something  to  hate  all  over  again.  but  believe  it  or  not,  i’m  trying  to  make  amends.  the  envelope  was  part  of  that. ”  shrugging  a  bit,  he  sighed.  “ it  helps  me  get  what  i  want  out  here  and  it  helps  you  close  cases  and  be  the  prized  agent  everyone  knows  you  are.  we  both  win.  can  you  live  with  that? ”

there  was  nothing  that  he  could  have  done  to  prepare  himself  for  any  of  this.  truthfully,  he’d  never  imagined  coming  face  to  face  with  her  ever  again.  he’d  wanted  to,  sure.  but  there  was  a  nagging  voice  in  his  head  that  told  him  he  was  making  a  mistake  by  seeing  here  again.  though,  the  moment  he’d  laid  eyes  on  her  again,  he  wasn’t  sure  how  any  of  it  could  be  a  mistake.  “ i’m  glad  you  came  alone.  would’ve  gotten  pretty  messy  if  you  didn’t,  i  think. ”  as  he  looked  at  her,  he  stuffed  his  hands  in  his  pockets  and  chuckled  gently.  “ glad  that  you’re  still  impressed  with  the  style.  i  may  be  working  with  the  underground  but  it  doesn’t  mean  i  can’t  look  the  part. ”  he  looked  at  her  then,  taking  a  chance  to  really  take  her  in.  how  she’d  changed  ever  so  slightly,  how  she  looked  at  him.  how  there  was  always  this  feeling  of  something  being  unresolved  between  them.  “ i’m  surprised  you  actually  came,  dinah. ”  a  beat.  “ i  thought  i  would’ve  gotten  a  message  tomorrow  saying  that  you  changed  your  mind. ”  taking  his  hands  out  of  his  pockets,  he  gestured  to  himself.  “ am  i  everything  you  hoped  i’d  be?  or  were  you  hoping  for  more  monster,  less  suave  born-again  business man? ”
