In My Skin (Marina de Van, 2002)
“In the opening credits of In My Skin a split screen displays a positive and negative of the same picture, which de Van related as “a desire to mutilate the image itself.” Like many tales of female neurosis de Van’s surprisingly beautiful take on auto-cannibalism and gory self-discovery shows a woman divided. On the surface she’s ambitious and collected, but an unexpected accident leads her to literally cut herself open to find the identity inside. Lanky François Ozon regular de Van herself stars in her directing debut as the upwardly mobile marketing assistant who accidentally cuts her leg open while stumbling through the backyard at a business party. She walks into a series of obstacles in the dark yard, but, feeling no sensation of pain, thinks she’s only ripped her trousers – until she notices the trail of blood staining the carpet behind her. When she goes to the doctor […] for stitches, he marvels at her claims of not feeling anything, given the severity of the gash. “That’s not normal”, he says, “Are you sure it’s your leg?” She responds with a startled look – because his flippant remark makes her question her relationship to her body. She starts to feel separate from it and grows hypersensitive to its functions, the texture and elasticity of her skin, the ease with which it can be cut open. She becomes fascinated with her wound and refuses to get corrective surgery for the tissue damage. Although she won’t say it outright, she doesn’t want the wound to heal. She takes to probing the injured tissue, digging into her stitches in dark corners at work, in the bathroom, in restaurants. When she can’t pick at her own body she substitutes it with peeling veneer off worn furniture, or exploring the grooves in dirty soap dishes. […] She becomes more and more alienated from her own body […]; she wakes up one morning with her arm numb – a common enough occurrence – but the scene is played out incredibly so that the limb seems like it is really not her own. […] Realizing her newfound compulsion cannot co-exist with society at large, her work, her relationships, she gets a hotel room where she can self-mutilate in peace. Holed up in this room, free of judgement, she cuts, hacks, picks, pulls and eats her own skin. She smears the blood all over herself. She collects large flaps of skin so she can tan and preserve them. This is not just about hurting herself to obliterate a more emotional level of pain – this is about self-discovery more than self-destruction. […] In a press statement relating to the film, de Van related the story of a childhood accident wherein she was hit by a car and had her leg broken: “I felt neither panic nor pain, when in fact I should have fainted. It was a very direct and rather violent way to experience this feeling of distance from one’s body. I was watching my leg just like any other object, a deformed object. The wound only had a visual existence. My mother showed me the X-rays and a part of the bone was missing, the part that was crushed had been thrown into the garbage. It reinforced my feeling of strangeness, A part of me had been thrown into the garbage just like my torn clothes. Later on, at school, my scars became a source of games. My friends and I had fun by putting needles in them because the skin had become insensitive. I was proud but at the same time I felt that this insensitivity was frightening.” […] Esther is going through major changes in her life at the time her cutting starts – a new job and subsequent promotion, a move into co-habitation with her boyfriend, the jealousy of her friend who resents Esther’s quick advancement at work – and like many cutters, her actions are motivated by a feeling of mental disintegration and disassociation. “It is through my body that I am in the world, that I am connected with others”, de Van relates in her press statement. “If I am no longer my body, what am I? Where does this desire come from to want to see what the body is, and if I am ‘inside’?“ - Kier-La Janisse, from House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films.

Female dancers in Hatari and their role - translation
Sólbjört’s research project for her degree from the Academy of the Arts is a 21-page essay (plus sources) on the role of the female dancers in Hatari, containing reflections on the band, feminism, the concept of the backup dancer, and a very interesting description of the process of planning and staging the May 23rd Gamla bíó concert that I attended! Below, I’ve translated and/or summarized the entire essay. It’s a really cool look into her mind and the thought behind the choreography.
I ended up quoting and translating probably the majority of the essay, but I did summarize some parts that were repeating points already made elsewhere or less interesting or relevant to fans of Hatari specifically. To avoid any confusion, I’ve presented the actual quotes in Tumblr’s quote format:
Quote
Anything not in an indented quote is my summary of the bits that I’m not quoting directly, with possible added commentary, etc.

Þræll (Slave) - transcript/translation
This is an… almost complete transcript/translation of “Þræll” (Slave), yet another unreleased Hatari song, wherein Klemens is in a master/slave relationship and… it may or may not be a healthy one? (Look, I swear I’m not just doing Klemens songs here.)
If you’d like to see other Hatari material transcribed/translated, feel free to drop an ask in my askbox!
