Lou Reed - Transformer: A year after Bowie tried to be Reed on one song, Reed spent an entire album trying to be Bowie, capitalizing on the glam rock craze of the time (including Ziggy Stardust - see below). But it would be wrong to dismiss this album as derivative - Reed puts his own spin...
I had a bit of an argument with my dad the other day about who the “American Beatles” are. He said Cheap Trick, while I, of course, said Big Star (I actually briefly changed my answer to Michael Penn, but then switched back). Cheap Trick are nice, but their sound is basically Big Star at their...

This Mortal Coil - Kangaroo - 1984
Excellent Big Star cover from This Mortal Coil.
Alex Chilton in an uncharacteristically chatty interview, on Japanese fans, the Big Star name, substance abuse and more.
"The record certainly appeals to people who don’t like music." - Ross Johnson, on his album "Make It Stop"
From an interesting new two-part interview dealing with his involvement with Alex Chilton and Tav Falco’s Panther Burns.
Includes mentions of a combo I hadn’t heard of:
I don’t really know what to call The Yard Dogs. I guess we were a street band. The Yard Dogs formed in April or May of 1978. We’d go to Downtown to what was once Main Street—it had turned into this place called The Mid-America Mall which completely killed Downtown. The Yard Dogs was me on snare, Alex on acoustic guitar and a guy named Chris Thompson—a friend to Tav Falco and Randall Lyon—who played a National Steel.
The Yard Dogs mostly played R&B and rock ‘n’ roll. We’d go down at lunchtime, open up the guitar case, and play for spare change. We setup across from Graceland. Our last show was at the Midtown Saloon.

Prologue: It’s a summer evening, sometime in the early aughts. I’m at a county fair with my brother in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. The now-reformed Box Tops are playing two sets that evening. Between sets, Alex Chilton saunters out from behind the bandstand. A few rush the front of the stage...

Ryan: Not too long after The Yard Dogs, you played on one of my favorite records, Like Flies On Sherbert (1979).
Ross: Yeah. There were two basic sessions for that record. The first one was in February of ‘78 at Sam...
