Favourite Lesser Known Blorbo: Round One Match Forty-Five
Raghu Seetharaman (Quiz Kid)
Mary Dudley (Freckles Marvel)
I’m thinking about what a concept for an Absolute Billy Batson could be like, based on my understanding of the Absolute approach from the books I’ve read so far.
One part of the character’s origin story that hasn’t already been inverted is that the Wizard Shazam is an ancient being that has to pass on his powers because he’s about to die. And usually he’s calmly resigned to this. I would say that the imagery of the large rock hanging above the Wizard’s head by a small string that he knows is about to break, but he just sits there because he accepts that it’s his time, is an iconic part of the Billy’s lore.
Connected to that, there’s overall a sense of fate in the character’s stories.
Pre-Crisis, in Mary’s first appearance, where it was revealed that Billy has a long lost twin sister he was separated from when they were babies, the Wizard Shazam says that he knew about Mary’s existence all along, but didn’t say anything because he also knew that they would eventually reunite at this time.
Post-Crisis, the Wizard Shazam actually wanted C.C. Batson, then already an adult, to become his champion, as opposed to a child like he was himself when he was chosen. However, we know that that was never going to happen because Billy is an established character. After meeting C.C., the Wizard got hit in the head and developed amnesia. A decade later, when C.C. then had children, a chance reunion with C.C. restored the Wizard’s memory. The Wizard then went to the Rock of Eternity to learn about what had happened during the past decade, and then he was done with that and tuned back into what was going on with C.C., it just so happened to be right before C.C. got murdered and it was too late for the Wizard to save him. So Billy, and then Mary, got the powers, still with it being because they were worthy of them, but also now with an aspect of family inheritance, as well. And the champion was once again a child, like the Wizard was himself.
New 52, the Wizard tested many people over years in search of someone worthy of his powers and never found one. When he was finally right about to die, the last person he tested just so happened to be Billy. Billy convinced him that nobody actually existed that fit his high, pure standard, which didn’t necessarily mean that Billy was the best choice. And then the Wizard gave Billy his powers because he was literally about to die and it was that or have no one with the magic to fight Black Adam. And then it does seem like Billy was specifically the right choice to defeat Black Adam because it seemed like Billy would have a unique understanding of him based on their similar histories. But then Black Adam ended up not being who they thought he was, so that wasn’t the case and someone else could have been the champion and it would have been fine. Except for that, again, of course it was Billy that was chosen.
And, connected to that sense of fate, Billy’s origin story usually has an overview of his history up to that point. Originally it was through the Historama, which the Wizard used to show Billy, as well as the audience, his perspective of Billy’s past. In the New 52 the Wizard uses an unnamed spell to show him and us Billy’s bad and good deeds. In Billy’s first ever appearance, the Wizard was just demonstrating that Billy had already been through a lot of bad things in his young life and yet was still good. But by the time of DC’s revival of the Marvel Family characters, it was portrayed as that the Wizard was aware of Billy when he was born and said, about infant Billy, that if he remained good despite whatever happened in his childhood then he would be worthy of the powers.
So, one unique inversion to the character’s concept would be to have the Wizard Shazam give Billy his powers not because he’s about to die, but because Billy is worthy or at least good enough now, as a child, but isn’t necessarily going to remain that way with whatever would have happened to him as a powerless teenager or adult. So Billy being given the powers when he’s a kid, before he’s negatively changed by the world, is changing or just ensuring his fate, ensuring that he is a good champion. And, also, the Wizard is motivated by feeling that he is no longer worthy. And the Wizard actually became the champion when he was an adult and feels that his life experiences before he got powers contributed to his problems, as opposed to the more typical concept of power corrupting, so he’s trying to do something different by choosing Billy as a child.
The concept of the Wizard misjudging and choosing the wrong person, someone good who turns bad after getting the powers, has been prominent ever since the first Crisis. Pre-Crisis Black Adam was a minor character who appeared in only one issue published by Fawcett Comics, which wasn’t Billy’s first appearance, so he wasn’t originally a part of the Wizard’s history or Billy’s origin story. (Though Pre-Crisis Black Adam did appear again when DC started published the character.) After that, Black Adam is obviously on the Wizard’s mind when he chooses Billy as Black Adam is the main villain of both Billy’s Post-Crisis and New 52 origin stories. And Black Adam was kept as a recurring character after those stories.
This concept was already inverted in the New 52, where it turns out that the Wizard did actually choose right, Amon was a good person and the powers didn’t change that, but Amon was too trusting and shared his powers with his Uncle Adam, who killed him and took all of the power for himself.
Obviously the Wizard is typically dead after Billy’s origin story. Pre-Crisis, Billy could visit the Rock of Eternity and light a brazer and speak with the Wizard’s ghost when he needed his specific counsel, but that happened rarely because Billy didn’t need him often. Post-Crisis, just thinking about the 90s, the Wizard was more involved. He was actively watching Billy and could speak to him through mirrors or as a cloud of smoke or in his dreams. He could instantly teleport Billy to the Rock of Eternity when he wanted to speak to him in person. There was even a storyline where the Wizard was very involved in Billy’s life, when Ibis the Invincible took the Wizard’s place at the Rock of Eternity and magically gave him a physical body so that the Wizard could spend time on Earth and the Wizard moved in with Billy. And later on there was a storyline where the Wizard went away to New Genesis and Billy had to deal with not being able to talk to him at all.
And in the New 52 origin story, while Billy feels out of his depth fighting Black Adam and wants to run away, it’s not a specific conflict that if only the Wizard were here to guide Billy, then he’d know what to do, just that with the Wizard being dead Billy being given the powers is irrevocable and Billy can’t give away the powers and responsibility to someone better-suited, or at least more willing to fight Black Adam, and then run away. And later, when the Wizard comes back, he and Billy have an antagonistic relationship where the Wizard is judgmental and rude and thinks choosing Billy was a mistake.
The Wizard deeming Billy unworthy and then taking the powers back isn’t totally unique. It briefly happens in the opening issues of The Power of Shazam! (1995). It’s otherwise a part of the concept in the New 52 that Billy has to have good intentions when he says the magic world or else it won’t work.
For the Wizard’s involvement post-Billy’s origin story, what I think would be the most unique and in-line with the Absolute spirit would be for the Wizard to be alive, either as an active mentor to Billy or in secret because he faked his death with the falling rock in order to watch Billy from behind the scenes. The Wizard can’t take Billy’s powers away now, but instead of the Wizard judging Billy as worthy and having that be the end of it, he’s trying to influence Billy and/or the events around him to ensure that he stays good, but Billy is unaware of this and thinks that he’s simply been judged worthy and given the powers and everything’s fine. This works if Black Adam is kept as a part of the history or not.
For his backstory, what I think would be best is for Billy to have had a mostly normal upbringing with his parents and twin sister, but a little bit of strife of some kind, which Billy incorrectly believes is all of the trouble he had to go through and remain a good person to be determined to be uniquely worthy of the powers for forever. This is in comparison to Billy’s Pre-Crisis backstory, which, lacking the family inheritance element of his worthiness, is fantastical in how tragic it is. And, rather than showing the audience the overview of his history at the beginning, it could only shown to Billy, so it’s a surprise to the audience later that it was only something mundane and common, like his parents getting a divorce.
I'm with you Jay, newborns are funky looking.

Thinking more about a childhood friends Tim and Billy AU that’s also a Tim joins the Batfamily late AU, and it’s just occurred to me that were Jason still to die in that AU we’d have a perfect setup for a Orpheus situation. Billy could use his favour with the gods to get them to the underworld and convince Hades to let them try, Tim of course would be the one to actually bring Jason back, and he has to listen as Robin demands to know who he is and what’s going on and begs him to turn around and explain and threatens to leave and Tim just has to keep going because Batman needs a Robin and Gotham needs a Batman.
I’ve been having death thoughts in relation to 2 of the 3 here and I need to share this image.
Jason: please
Jason: hellloooooo?
Jason: TALK TO ME!
Jason: Who are you? Where are we going!?
Billy: (to himself) learn the lessons of history, learn the lessons of history, learn the lessons—
Tim, digging up Jason’s coffin with a medkit and healing potions off to the side: “Handle the physical part” he says, “I’ll go get his soul, you get the EASY job!” Easy my behind
Bruce, deep in his post-DITF depression: (opens door)
Billy and Tim in poor kid disguises: Yes, hi, hello, this is your kid right?
Jason, fully alive and confused as to how or who these kids are: (waves)
Bruce: (has a heart attack)

Hello world, I've had a cursed late night thought! Do you want to hear it? Of course you do, you have no choice :D
Y'all remember that one comic panel of Mary Marvel eating bullets like they were nothing? The Marvel Family are immune and resistant to so many things that they can eat bullets and have no consequences from eating poisons, too. Bizarre to the world, but very fun to them, I assume! I think Billy as Captain Marvel has also eaten bullets before, and bitten non edible materials in the past just for funsies. But what about Freddy?
What cursed thing can he eat to intimidate an enemy?
Kryptonite.
Let the boy eat Kryptonite with a crunch and munch like it was a rock candy 🍬
Let an enemy mistake him for a Kryptonian and use Kryptonite against him with a smug smile on their face, only to be beyond horrified when they see the blue Marvel chomp the green glowing rock like it was nothing.
Bonus points if Freddy even scares Billy and Mary with this because who in their right mind would willingly eat Kryptonite as their first plan of action??
what frustrates me a lot about people boiling down dick and damian’s relationship to dick being damian’s parent is that i think the reason damian is so close to dick and trusts him as much as he does is BECAUSE dick isn’t his parent. to damian, the concept of parents and being parented are inextricably intertwined with expectations, from both bruce and talia. both from talia giving him up for adoption as well as bruce’s initial rejection of him when he first came to gotham, as well as ras’s role as the predominant parental figure in his life during his time in the league of shadows.
we see his instinctive disdain for being “babied” as well as the repeated theme of him feeling like he has to earn bruce’s respect and be worthy of being the heir of both sides of his family. dick, in contrast, is an older guiding figure in his life, but his care for damian manifests in a very different way - we see him respecting damian’s skills and intellect, and he doesn’t condescend to him or feel the need to parent him. (to clarify, i don’t think bruce and talia necessarily place these expectations on him knowingly, but their exalted status results in damian feeling the weight of their legacies and what it means to live upto them.)
in contrast, dick and damian’s bond is separated from the conventions of parenthood, which is why damian is more open with him, because he doesn’t feel the need to impress dick or convince him of his worth.
(note: when i speak of talia’s legacy, i mean in the sense of classic!talia who is an antihero allied with batman, not her post-morrison version.)

Fanfic idea where instead of the Justice League learning about Billy’s trauma and childhood through him as Billy Batson, they learn tibbits of it through Captain Marvel, who would have very concerning view points that he probably doesn’t realize are really fucking concerning.
Like, let the guy say the most concerning shit that makes them pause for a moment like ‘what the fuck’ or ‘why the fuck does he know that??’ or even ‘who the hell raised this guy??’
Let Marvel admit to becoming the champion of magic at {insert age here cause I can’t remember} and how his ‘crowning’ happened.
None of that probably made sense but generally, let him concern the fuck out of people by being his traumatized self as Captain Marvel and not Billy Batson.
It was a meeting, again, and even though Marvel felt like they were some times unnecessary, or boring, or unnecessary, or boring ya get the idea, he still participated, can't let his boy scout rep plummet and also that would impact him if Very important information was being discussed that he would miss out on and that would probably be annoying, or inconvenient, or both, and Marvel is too tired these days for that.
As Superman finished discussing and relaying info, which was basically checking in with how everything is going and if there were any weird things going on lately, Flash began small talk to elevate the atmosphere from Fucking Boring to It's Not That Bad.
"Heyyy guys, doin anything fun lately? How's patrol been? Any fun stories to tell?" His grin was suggesting that maybe someone had a wacky thing to tell, but most just hummed out a 'yeah nothing much man' or something similar, looking over everyone's face Flash pouted from the increasing speeds of everything being more boring, until Marvel started to hum in thought
"well, big guy? What's the big red cheese been up to? Anythin fuuunnn??"
"come to think of it, I did see my uncle recently"
That was world shattering to some of them, Marvel has, an uncle, the demi god guy, has an uncle, they just assumed he was immortal!
"wh.. WHAT?! When!? And more importantly you have an uncle?!?" Flash spouted his questions at super speed
"well, yeah, but he's more like, my only blood? Is that how you say it? [Solomon answered "yes"] Yeah, anyway, he was being rude, calling me things like 'you mangey son of a___' and 'go to hell you useless orphan!' and 'you little ___, ___, ___" or something similar, so I just walked past him as always" Zeus censored everything inappropriate with the sound of thunder and lightning as per usual, but everyone immediately filled in the gaps, and.. it was honestly shocking to them, Marvel, a great guy, has a relative who hates his guts, and curses him out whenever he sees him?? That just sounds awful, and he's his only relative??? Marvel is an orphan??? This happened more than once?!
"o..okay man, did something else happen recently..?" Flash tried to continue the conversation, this has been the most Marvel has talked about himself other than favourite colour and food things!
"well, Sivana tried to use my dead parents against me in a fight a few days ago"
What
"he didn't do necromancy per say, because my parents corpses were never really brought back to Fawcett for burial after they got murdered on their travel, but he did use illusion magic with the help of an artifact he swiped from a magician, cruel move on his part I'll admit, anyway so, because of the fact that I don't remember my parents that well, the illusion was easy to get out of, with the help of my powers it was easy to break the spell or whatever the appropriate label for that trick is, so yeah, that's been my week"
Everyone felt their eyes water, this poor guy, the concern they felt was immense, maybe they can do something for him? He has been through a lot recently, although it is even more concerning how he was so nonchalant about it!
"hey cap? How are you holding up after all that?"
Marvel, a bit puzzled by Flash's question, smiled to not seem rude because he did not know what the hell the question was for "nothing i can't handle! Easy as pie friend!"
The horror of the implications, just, indescribable
"speaking of pie, I haven't had any since mom died, maybe I should save up for some later"
COME ON MAN
Captain marvel coming in one day: Hey Bats! Tell your kid thanks!
Batman:???? For what? Which kid?
CM: the Red Hood guy, murderered the guy that disabled my bestie few years back! I definitely couldn’t do it for my moral reasons but I haven’t seen Junior this happy since he got the chance to wallop the guy!
The entire JL:….
Hal, whispering to Barry: I can hear his blood pressure rising…
Also
CM: Good news everybody! My twin was just swapped at birth and not dead this whole time
CM: this is Mary Marvel, she’s super cool and awesomely heroic!
Mary Marvel: (Happily waving) Hi!
JL: (collective spit take)
Also also
CM: hey flash, you mess with time at all lately?
Flash: No??? Why, what happened?
CM: Nothing too bad, just got thrown into an alternate reality where my parents didn’t die but were the ones that got my powers instead? My childhood was seriously wicked there! 😊
Flash: Oh shit man, how’d you get back?!
CM: My dad figured out the whole universe was like, deeply wrong or something? Fate said I had to be orphaned and had to be the superhero so the world kinda started falling apart and my parents had to say their final goodbyes and junk to me and Mary.
Flash: oh god man, I’m so sorry…
CM: eh, not too bad. Got to hug my mom again before she faded outta existence but I guess fate wants what it wants
